Great place, wonderfully whimsical and endlessly fascinating. Easily managed by excellent hosts (and Rosie...have her blood bottled.) Very comfortable and informal with really good food and wine. Only complaint: our city dog said their country dogs exhibited a somewhat excessively proprietorial droit de seigneur when it came to territorial delineation. But you can't have everything.

Throughout our stay the service, care and interest displayed by all staff was impeccable. Hidden away in the back lanes of South Devon it is an oasis where self indulgent pleasure is actively encouraged. Despite the rambling quirky nature of the building our room overhanging the stream was spacious, light and airy. The garden and the lawns promote tea drinking, dozing and reading. The bar is cosy and friendly. The restaurant is outstanding.
The engaging and affable nature of the proprietor made the stay a memorable delight.

My husband and I have just spent 4 nights staying at Fingals with our 1 year old and we've had a really relaxing break - which is not that easy to achieve with a toddler! When we arrived, we were greeted with tea and homemade cake on the lawn (very welcome after a 5 hour drive) and our daughter then spent the next few hours exploring the beautiful gardens and playing with the owner's two dogs. The evenings worked wonderfully for us too as we were able to put our daughter to sleep in our bedroom (in the main house) and then go down for drinks and dinner with the baby monitor on. We spent two evenings on our own table and two evenings eating with others and met some lovely people. The food was excellent and the staff, particularly Rosie, made the place very special.

I've stayed here three times now. Once before we had children about 6 years ago and twice with my children and I love it! I can't understand why people are so down on the place in some reviews. Think of it as less of a hotel, more of an eccentirc friend's house in the country. Seriously comfortable sofas to sink into to, dogs curled up in the living room, probably one of the most beautiful, peaceful and relaxing gardens I've ever had the pleasure of sitting in, the best lawn tennis court outside of Wimbledon and a top location. No traffic noise......infact no noise whatsoever, no mobile reception and close to some of the country's greatest beaches. As an antedote to London it is perfect. Bliss!
Ok, so why have I given the hotel four stars instead of five? If I could change one thing about the hotel, it would be to update the bathrooms. I've only stayed in two rooms at the hotel but the bathrooms are a bit tired, not bad, just a bit tired. If I could change that then I'd give it five stars.
Top tip: enjoy the evening sun on the croquet lawn sinking a well earned drink.

My husband and I spent a wonderful 3 days last summer in the Folly at Fingals.
Beautiful location and lovely surroundings, right beside the river with our own boat/bench where we spent peaceful afternoons.
Good day out at both Dartmouth and Totnes.
One day I hope to return to Fingals
