“Always perfect!”

We have been going to Fingals for years with friends or just with our kids. We love Fingals, the place is magic and so is the location. We always meet interesting people there and love to see Richard and Sheila. Over the years we have slept in nearly every room, and have had large 40th and recently, 50th birthday parties there too. As others have said, Fingals is more like a friend's house than a hotel. It's not for everyone, as the reviews make clear. But we can't wait to go back for our 60th!

The person who showed us to our room (stream room) appeared surprised to see a large number of dead flies on the floor, and quickly produced a dustpan to clean them up. We didn't think much of this until later, when the reason became apparent. This room (I don't know about others) has a serious cluster fly infestation. They come in through cracks in the dodgy structure and were everywhere, like a scene from Amityville Horror. This is clearly an ongoing problem because the owners have installed some type of foul smelling poison, which is very effective at killing flies by the dozen, but do you really want to spend your stay listening to swarms of buzzing, dying flies, with a pervading odour of fly killer (the effect of which gave me a splitting headache)?
On the positive side, the location ang grounds are beautiful and the bed was the most comfortable I have ever slept in, but the owners should get a clue - it's not fair to rent this room to unsuspecting guests, at any price, let alone top dollar.

We remember this occasion as many of the surrounding properties – private and well as holiday homes – had this problem at exactly the same time. As you say we cleared up the flies immediately and took steps to try to stop them re-appearing. We have invested in a non-toxic, electronic system which is proving extremely effective and sincerely hope that no-one has to be bothered by these flies in the future.

Thank you for your kind comments about our lovely grounds and the comfortable bed, I’m so pleased that you enjoyed a good sleep.

Great place, wonderfully whimsical and endlessly fascinating. Easily managed by excellent hosts (and Rosie...have her blood bottled.) Very comfortable and informal with really good food and wine. Only complaint: our city dog said their country dogs exhibited a somewhat excessively proprietorial droit de seigneur when it came to territorial delineation. But you can't have everything.

Throughout our stay the service, care and interest displayed by all staff was impeccable. Hidden away in the back lanes of South Devon it is an oasis where self indulgent pleasure is actively encouraged. Despite the rambling quirky nature of the building our room overhanging the stream was spacious, light and airy. The garden and the lawns promote tea drinking, dozing and reading. The bar is cosy and friendly. The restaurant is outstanding.
The engaging and affable nature of the proprietor made the stay a memorable delight.

My husband and I have just spent 4 nights staying at Fingals with our 1 year old and we've had a really relaxing break - which is not that easy to achieve with a toddler! When we arrived, we were greeted with tea and homemade cake on the lawn (very welcome after a 5 hour drive) and our daughter then spent the next few hours exploring the beautiful gardens and playing with the owner's two dogs. The evenings worked wonderfully for us too as we were able to put our daughter to sleep in our bedroom (in the main house) and then go down for drinks and dinner with the baby monitor on. We spent two evenings on our own table and two evenings eating with others and met some lovely people. The food was excellent and the staff, particularly Rosie, made the place very special.
