Just returned from 2 nights at the Rockford Inn, the location is lovely, very peaceful and pretty scenary with great walks on your doorstep. All staff very helpful and friendly, ate here one night and food was nice also as was breakfast. Stayed in room 4 which was a little small and the bed creaked horrendously with every movement! Only other thing was that the bathroom could do with a blind as the net curtain doesnt really do a great job at night if you want the light on. Aside from that everything else in room was fine. Parking is quite a pain, we went out one evening and had nowhere to park on return so had to double park and wait for someone to leave the pub which was a bit aggravating. Overall it is a good base for exploring Exmoor and is a good tradtional place as long as you aren't looking for every modern luxury. Enjoyed the stay and would recommend.

We try to listen to the comments made and where possible make changes to improve our service, thank you Tripadvisor. However, sometimes we can sometimes we can't.

The parking issue is becoming a bit of theme. Yes, if you want to park right outside the door we only have car park space for 15 cars. And yes, at peak times, it does sometimes become full especially at meal times when we have an influx of visitors. However, as I keep pointing out, there is FREE parking along the lane no more that 50 yards away. That's the part of the problem of being in a National Park I suppose. Because we are in a rocky gorge sandwiched between the wooded hillside and the river we are unable to create more space for cars. This isn't a problem for most people who come here to relax and don't mind being parted from their tin box by a short distance. They probably come here to enjoy the exertions of good walk anyway. However, if you are coming as resident, we have decided thatthere is nothing to stop you from asking Sarah & Cathryn to reserve you a space!

Couldn't do anything about the room size I'm afraid - it's still on the small size, but this is reflected in the price. It's small also!

Finally, regarding the net curtain and privacy issue. Well the bathroom to 4 does overlook the river, and not being sure if you could see any potentially embarrassing actions at night I swam out to the highest rock to see what i could see. However the angle wasn't right, it was too low and no matter how I craned my neck I wasn't able to see inside. I suppose if I had climbed the oak tree on the opposite bank I might have had a better view. However, sympathizing with Ambers plight I have decided to take up her suggestion by adding a blind, so you may now relieve yourself without fear.

Good food, thanks, and fair prices. But where is the Restaurant?
Sat in uncomfortable seats in a not over glamourous bar. Web site gave the impression we would be in a restaurant......
And lousy parking - only a few spaces, and I suspect that some of these were filled with cars belonging to staff.... That was the first disappointment.

Reviews like this suggest that Devonbob simply came to wrong place. Another case of not doing your research properly.

To be clear The Rockford Inn is a traditional English pub, old and unspoiled, dating back to the 17th Century. It is not a 'restaurant'. The word 'Inn' gives a clue to this. However, we do serve good, freshly cooked PUB grub with the ingredients sourced from local producers on Exmoor.

Glamourous bar? On Exmoor? Amongst the sheep farmers and fishermen? We're in the middle of the North Devon countryside, not Hollywood, for heavens sake! We are in a National Park famed for its natural beauty and extreme weather. Glamour isn't allowed up here in the wilderness. It's rural England at its best. It's horse muck and sheep's poo. Try asking the ramblers or canoeists, horse-riders, bird-watchers or cyclists if they have come here to rub shoulders with the hoi polloi. Uncomfortable seats? Well they're just what would expect to find in a pub - padded benches and stools - sorry about that. If you want glamour, don't bother coming here, it will be a wasted journey and you may just go home disappointed. Might I suggest you take a train up to Chelsea or Kensington.

I do not apologize for our website either, it is a very accurate description of what you can expect to find here. If you pay attention you might even see a picture or two!

Lousy parking? We have parking for 12 cars. The staff who live here take up 1 space! When this becomes full, which it sometimes does, there is plenty of room for cars to park for free along the lane and up the hill, no more than 50 yards away.

If you want to fall out of your car and into a padded recliner, may I suggest you try the Little Chef on the M3.

Hats off to Devonbob for his appreciation for the things that really matter in life: "Good food and fair prices"

My closing note on this unfair review is that "Glamour" comes at a cost which isn't always measured by money!

The location is wonderful, you are in the middle of nowhere next to a fast flowing river with wonderful walks straight from the door. Sarah and Cathryn were welcoming and helpful.
The room was small and the decor didn't live up to the website photos with garish pub carpet clashing with the muted beiges of the rest of the decor but the bed was comfortable and the bathroom was very smart.
The dinner menu was your typical British pub grub ie scampi and chips, bangers and mash, steak and kidney pudding which we found very uninspiring and again from the website was expecting a slightly more gourmet experience. Everything was in those horrid little plastic packages: sauces, uth milk with the tea, jam and marmelade, would have been so much nicer at breakfast to have local preserves in proper jars and maybe some muesli and fruit and yoghurt as well as kellogs cereals.
The thing that shocked us the most was being served a jug of instant coffee at breakfast - it felt like going back 30 years. Surely everybody serves fresh cafetiere-style coffee these days?
On the whole I would recommend it for the location, not with kids as the rooms are tiny with no tv and it rains a lot in Devon, but a good base for hiking. There are some nice places to eat in Lynton if you don't fancy pub grub everynight.

It might seem churlish to respond to this one but here goes;

I don't think our website is inaccurate, painting a picture of a "gastro pub" (horrid things, gastro pubs, should never have been invented). If you can be bothered to look at our website properly you will find a whole page dedicated to the menu which lists nothing else but good pub grub. The Rockford is a traditional English Pub, with rooms, not a "gourmet experience". Rick Stein and crowd are further down the coast. Maybe the interior design isn't exactly Laura Ashley either but I do think this reviewer is right when describing aspects of The Rockford Inn as "comfortable and smart".

Again, it seems like this customer just selected the wrong place to stay and didn't do thorough research. I think for £25/30 quid or so per night we give very good value for money. If you want a choice of fruit, muesli and yogurt as well as cafetiere-style coffee for breakfast I might suggest you dig a bit deeper and pay for it somewhere more salubrious! I hear The Savoy serves those poncy little jars of marmalades and preserves. I wonder what their room rate is? hmmm..

We do, however, provide a hearty full English breakfast, tea, toast , cereals and orange juice. And if you have a special request Cathryn & Sarah are always happy to try and oblige, just give them a little notice.
