“Again, a Wonderful Break with Friends”
Reviewed 19 May 2011

There are several reasons why we keep returning to the Staghunters. Firstly, the location is superb, just off Exmoor and within easy reach of the coast. Plenty of opportunities for walking, sightseeing and relaxing. Secondly, this hotel offers great accommodation, great food and all the comfort you need after a day out walking. Lastly, the owners and staff do everything they can to make your stay as perfect as it could be.

I have never stayed at a hotel where the owners make you so welcome. Its more like staying with friends. In the bar in the evening, you are certain to meet other couples who share this view of the Staghunters,

If you value tradition and good value, The Staghunters is for you.

This family run Hotel is in an ideal location for people who want to walk, ralax or visit some of the nearby tourist attractions. Offering excellent value for money, this family run hotel is being gradually renovated to its former glory, whlst retaining its character and charm.

The restaurant offers a good selection on home cooked food, including quite a varied vegetarian menu, all at very reasonable prices. The 'House' wines offer a good selection and again excellent value.

Overall, we stayed in this hotel because of its location as we wanted to walk in the Doone Valley and on Exmoor. We have been pleasantly surprised with how lovely the hotel is and how nice it was to come back to somewhere so comfortable and friendly after a hard day of walking. All of the staff and management are a delight by being so friendly and accommodating.

Our second visit. Again thoroughly enjoyed the peaceful location, excellent food and service at this family run pub/hotel. A gem if you are visiting North Devon. On the banks of the river and ideal walking area.

We traveled down to the Staghunters for our anniversary, very appropriate as we had stayed on our original honeymoon. The Hotel has the most beautiful setting by the River Lyn and is a lovely huntung inn style hotel. The owners are very friendly as always. They even supplied food for our dog when we had forgotten it! The rooms are being progressivly upgraded and we had an excellent size room with a bath. At night all we could hear was the gentle flow of the river. We ate in the bar in the evening, the food was very good with a varied selection. There was also plently of atmosphere from both people who live locally and visitors. Breakfast was great and set us up for a days walking on the moor very well. A really relaxing break and the accomadation rate, with dinner, B and B included is very competative. We will be back again over the summer.

Room Tip: Ask if the rooms with portches are available.

I have just got back from a fantastic weekend away at 'the stag hunters hotel' with my girlfriend. I booked for us to go away as a treat for my girlfriends birthday to stay in the room with a four poster bed. We are in our mid 20's and wanted a peaceful, relaxing weekend away where we could enjoy just our own company and get away from the busy hustle and bustle of the West Midlands. A big part of choosing the Stag Hunters (I have been previously with family) was that we wanted to get away from all stress's which included having no phone signal, so we couldn't receive any phone calls especially 'work' related calls! The scenic views when you are at the hotel are simply stunning, a beautiful little beer garden next to a stream with the sun shining, it really doesn't get any better than that. The meals were all cooked to perfection and the staff were super friendly, helpful and a pleasure to speak to.

The Wyburn family are gradually upgrading The Staghunters, as each time we visit the bedrooms are better. The food's always been good anyway, and the staff are all lovely. The roaring log fire in the bar, the view over the garden at breakfast time, the rush of the River Lyn in front of the property, have all become precious, and we'll be back in a few months time. Thank you Richard, Wendy, Simon, James and staff. As usual, we had a lovely break.

I've known the Stag Hunters for a few years as some of my family live locally. The Wyburn family contribute a wonderful mix of skills, from front of house to superb breakfasts in the lovely garden breakfast room. Stunning Mick Cawston paintings too!
No family could try harder ... in this day and age to find a flourishing village pub/hotel with a pool team, regular Sunday lunchers and the rest - alongside a flourishing trade to incomers - is quite exceptional,
The weekend I was staying, there was a 50pax celebration in the function room, full hotel, a large complement of motor enthusiasts on the Sunday, plus the normal Sunday night gathering of locals for village activities. If any 'incomer' criticises this hotel for small inadequacies, he doesn't understand how rare a combination the StagHunters is - a family-run business, with great food freshly prepared from local ingredients and heartwarming hospitality.
