Another wonderful visit!

5.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 5 May 2017
On this occasion, we were here with family and friends to celebrate my husband's 65th. We seem to have at least one "special birthday" every year!

I can safely say that friends and family continue to be impressed by the wonder of Staghunters – it truly is a haven of hospitality, beauty and general “wonderfulness”!! Even after more than 20 years, I never fail to fall in love all over again and so much of that is due to the fantastic Wyburns and their staff. They are all amazing and I personally am so glad that, having spread the word, many more friends and friends of friends now visit and appreciate how wonderful Staghunters is.

There is always a selfish part of me that thinks that, by spreading the word, we might end up one day not being able to get a room - as if! I'll take that chance - they deserve my praise!!

A little gem in a beautiful setting. The hotel is old and has quirky rooms but all the staff and locals treat you like family. This was born out by the other guests who told me they are frequent visitors. The food is scrumptious and special dietary requirements are catered for. All this and dog friendly too.

Room tip: Balcony rooms overlook the garden but book early.

On recently visiting this establishment ( having been here many times before) I was shocked and very disappointed at the lack of welcome, the arrogant manner of the apparent owner ( I have since found out) , the lack of cleanliness and overall lack of knowledge of ales etc available. The impression was that I ought to be grateful that we were being served at all. What a shame especially as I had taken family there after saying what a great place it was. Not again.Ps abit of brasso and a hoover wouldn't come amiss. :)

Dear gooseegg2017,

I'm sorry my service disappointed you on this occasion.
Sometimes customers are served out of turn when the bar is crowded and several people are waiting. Occasionally I do not even know a customer requires serving if they are chatting to people at the bar, a polite "excuse me" would rectify this.
I do try to welcome everyone on arrival but at busy times, whilst serving, this isn't always possible.
We are in the CAMRA good beer guide, at a quieter time I would be only too happy to discuss ales with you.
The bar is thoroughly cleaned every morning.
I will gladly welcome you and your friendly campers back next Easter bank holiday weekend and try and do better on the service front!
Best wishes,
Richard.

Although we've been coming to Staghunters for years, this is my 1st review. We recently drove down for the day to walk the dog and drop in for lunch and a pint. On chatting to Simon, behind the bar and as he (unusually for a weekend), had a couple of spare rooms that night, we were offered a good deal and talked into staying over.
So, as always, some cracking food and again a perfectly kept pint of Exmoor Gold.
Breakfast here is honestly, often the best I've had at any hotel.
Although our 1st visit for a couple of years, not much has changed; so if you're looking for a truly family run, dog friendly, traditional country hotel........this is for you. Well done and thank you again, Wendy, Richard and family and staff.

Room tip: Our favourite is room 1 but all rooms are good.

We love the Stag Hunters - always a great welcome, it just feels lke a home from home. Having just spent a long weekend here again, with some of our family my only problem is that the food is so great - I need to go on a diet for a few days. We shall return again and again.

If you are looking for a traditional country pub for a great pub lunch then Staghunters is your place. With it's low ceilings, log fire and quiet ambience, this was the perfect place for refuelling during an Exmoor hike. The staff were incredibly welcoming and accommodating. You must have village brewed Wicked Wolf Gin - utterly refreshing!
I had the exmoor steak burger which was delicious!
