First visit to Poplars Hotel and all the marvellous things I had been told were true. Cliff and Jean know how to treat guests as they make you feel like a friend right from the start. Cliff is the most genial of hosts whilst Jean is busy in the kitchen cooking up really good home cooking with good choices. Evenings spent in the bar with Cliff, Jean and other guests were most entertaining. They run a clean and comfortable hotel where you just feel at home and with a group booking it would feel more like a house party. Also of course Coombe Martin is a very good location for coast walks and all that North Devon has to offer. I look forward to returning later in the year.

Room Tip: Book early as the hotel is very popular

You may need your walking boots, or a liking for beautiful beachs a heathy appetite, the ability to enjoy laughs and entertainment and for the "stressed out" it is a must. It should be available on the NHS.
You may arrive as a stranger but you will leave as a friend.

We first stayed at the Poplars some years ago.We enjoyed our stay so much that we have continued to stay there whenever we are holidaying in Devon including taking our extended family on one occasion. We always enjoy every aspect of our stay, including visiting the beautiful coastline easily accessible from the hotel.
We particularly enjor the excellent food prepared by Jean and usually served by Cliff who makes full use of his wonderful sense of humour.
Later in the evening we can retire to the bar where one can enjoy a drink and be entertained by Cliff's musical renditions which are a must.
The Hotel is being continually upgraded without affecting guests in any way and is always spotlessly clean with good ensuite facilities and a warm & friendly atmosphere. A real pleasure to stay in such comfortable surroundings.

We have recently got back from a five night break at The Poplars Hotel in Combe Martin, North Devon. From the welcoming pot of tea on arrival to the relaxed conversation in the cosy bar in the evenings, we could not fault it. The full English breakfast set us up for the day and was well cooked and nicely presented - not greasy as can so often be the case. Evening meals were available but we chose B&B as we wanted to experience the local night life. We paid extra for a balcony with sea view and would recommend you do the same as it was very pleasant sitting outside on the covered balcony enjoying a cup of tea. There were plenty of plugs for hairdrier/straighteners etc.. and plenty of wardrobe and drawer space. The ensuite was more than adequate and there was plenty of hot water for showering - ladies take a shower cap if you don't want to wash your hair every day as the shower is quite powerful with a large 'sunflower' shower head! The village has a variety of pub/restaurants but we used The Dolphin as we felt comfortable with the locals. A very enjoyable break in one of the friendliest family run hotels we have stayed in. Cliff and Jean Jefferies, the owners, made us feel comfortable and at home and we would certainly return to The Poplars.

We may run out of superlatives when describing Jean and Cliff Jeffries and their hotel, The Poplars, which ideally situated in Coombe Martin. From the first welcoming cup of tea or coffee on arrival to the final farewells at the end of the stay, just everything is perfect. Jean's cooking is absolutely delicious and we thoroughly enjoyed every meal in the warm, welcoming dining room. After dinner, a drink in Cliff's bar with his own brand of quirky entertainment rounds off a day spent in beautiful Devon. Then it's off to your warm, comfortable bedroom with its spotlessly clean ensuite facilities to dream the night away. We have stayed three times with Jean and Cliff and meet up with other regular visitors - it is a truly home-from-home experience, Jean and Cliff have been welcoming their guests for many years to The Poplars and are great hosts. There is such a welcoming, friendly atmosphere and we would recommend our friends and family to stay with no hesitation whatsoever. Till the next time...
