Bring back the Royal Marine ! Sorry, we were at the "Pack" just a few days ago in January, sorry but the food was poor. In short and honestly: our Sunday Lunch was cold, just rubbish. This Pack o' Cards is not as good as it used to be, or as good as it pretends. In fact it is going down hill.

Sunday lunch is one of the most important meals of the week, and customers pay , expecting a hot tasty meal. Single people are going to be hugely disappointed in Combe Martin, simply because they are not wanted or welcomed.

Verdict, avoid the Pack o' Cards and avoid Combe Martin altogether. Its Pubs are either rough or sinking fast. Thanks heaven for its Fish n Chips shops, the Bakery, and the "George" which are Combe Martin's only, wonderful saving grace.

* We tried to complain, the young girls did their best, tyhe owners were not around
* We gave up and decided to finish and leave. The meal costs us £10.00 each
* We were left in the dark until we had almost finished the meal
* We were not welcomed, as usual the owners ignore you or aren't around
* Our meat was cold, our Yorkshire pud was cold, and the plate was cold
* Our cutlery was useless, extremely cheap blunt knives and forks for cutting lamb and beef?
* Nobody asked us the entire time we were there if we were okay

We have just come back from short break and decided to have Sunday roast here, if was very good and was cooked fresh not kept warm. The veg was not soft or overcooked and there was plenty served on the plate, we sat in the restaurant as the bar had at least 3 dogs in it which is fine if just having a drink. The staff were very friendly and were quick to serve, with a good choice of beers.

Average to good rating - just on four stars. Looked this place up after the holiday and it's a historic site. The head sheds seem a bit up themselves to be honest, which is probably why Pub chains take their business away . Been meaning to rate these places and forgot, while browsing TripAdv. we remembered being there twice in August 2013. :) We went there August 14, which IIRC was a Wednesday evening, and a week later but they weren't serving food that time. Holidayed around there summer 2013, boarding at Ilfracombe. Food? okay, ours was just warm and not really hot. I paid around £15 for steak and drink, can't remember the rest but it was pricey for what it was. Cold. Plates were all cold at service. Bar, restaurant, ambience were all okay.

Staff were the best part, all smiley and welcoming. Boss lady seems a bit snobby, one of those who looks you up and down with a sniff, just a personal experience I remember v. well. Obviously the owners are not "mein hosts", hardly saw them and we weren't welcomed or spoken to. This is where the Wetherspoons will take the local business, there was a big site set aside for their new Pub on the Ilfracombe sea front last year. They will win because they can welcome people and serve anything, not lahdi dah bosses, not at inflated pretentious prices, and do it fairly well. From what I experienced, Ilfracombe/Coombe Martin needs to sort itself out.

Pack.o.Cards customers were friendly. Great big garden at the back for the kids with smoking and play area and some kinds of huts, not sure what that was about. While that's all great - they don't make the most of it. This was a family trip which the kids liked, I wouldn't choose it for business though. All in all not bad. They could do so much with that place and with the menu, shame the food isn't red hot too, it's very simple to talk to people visiting your Pub and to get hot food out.

In our opinion, the Pack of Cards Combe Martin has it all, dining experience, good food as far as we can tell, quality of restaurant, cleanliness, atmosphere and venue. This time our service was wonderful. To be fair, running Pubs with food is a tough gig but it's how you do it; consistency, hot good food, friendly service, affordable, clean and welcoming comfy atmosphere. that makes the difference. Every single paying customer is a valuable customer that talks and reports. It seems the "Pack" Combe Martin gets it right. We should feel at home and part of the family, with a great, hot, affordable dinner just like we get at home. Music and entertainment is welcome, we have to pay sometimes but it's about a fiver and the bands have to be paid. Best in Combe Martin or Ilfracombe (which is just sad), we think. Thank you.

Yes, our subsequent visit was better, and markedly so early in December. Last visit, we had one experience which rather belied their claims and "great Chef" (you're serving people who've been in hospitality and professional catering for several decades). But at the beginning of this month one of us had a warm reception and a truly delicious Sunday dinner at the Pack of Cards, Combe Martin. In our opinion this is the best of the lot because the local Cafes and the Pubs, are on half-hearted winter mode in Combe Martin. Same every year. Why not do it properly, or just close?

The "Pack" is trying hard. Not all of the day-time local drinkers there are savory, but ignore one or two and it's fine. On our last visit we had a great Sunday roast with all the trimmings and condiments for around a tenner: a great big plate of vegetables, roast potatoes and a lovely side dish of cauliflower cheese. They weren't just any veggies, and this is not a run of the mill meal. Yes, they do have great Chefs and staff. Their meals are usually hot and delicious, which isn't hard to do, but truly hot food including *hot* meat ((75-90 degrees C.) is a rarity in restaurants, which will spoil any visit.

Well done, and we understand you're having Christmas events and opening up. See you then :) Replies and opinions to these reviews are equally accepted and taken on the chin .
