The "Pack" is a bit up and down, depending on how busy it is...this is usual in catering... no-one is perfect. The food is usually consistent. Businesses have to make money, and the Pack' is a lovely experience. Saying that, the prices are high, and some locals have left the Pack' for cheaper options. Which is understandable but when locals cannot afford to sup there, it is also a waste of local trade. There is always a table for you at the Pack' and lovely waitresses with beaming smiles. But you'll pay for it, and few will get a job. It may come down to the trade's insistence on young people and the ability to dominate staff but in this area, the village is an obvious hive of ageism, racism, and perhaps a few more isms that won't be challenged. Like the other businesses and hallowed Combe Martin halls, they can, and will, do whatever they like without fear. Still, they aren't trying to con us with a fake milkshake dressed up in a glass for over two quid (Ilfracombe startup). That's real food crooks, folks.
It was good while it lasted however, and the winter months were comfy. Now summer is here it is- as usual- time to seek out the value Pubs serving good food at great prices. The George/Quackers at the top of the Combe Martin village is great on Sundays. There are better, more cash-value options in the village, and although the region is fast becoming a food luvvie's playgroud, the honest johns are still about..
