Stayed for a couple of nights whilst shooting nearby.
Lovely hosts which made the stay. No tv in the room was a bit of a nuisance when your on your own. There was a large lounge which looked nice but was very cold. However I was the only guest, I'm sure would be warmer and more welcoming with more guests staying.
Great location in the middle of Exmoor.

We stayed here for two nights in August as a last minute trip to Exmoor over the bank holiday - so were pretty pleased to find something that was reasonable to stay in.
If however we were booking a bit further in advance I may not rush back.
It isnt that this is a terrible place to stay, but does have a few down sides.

The good points first:

The hosts are really nice and friendly - they are helpful and welcoming and definitely arent instrusive

Breakfast is nice cooked with quality ingredients presented well. You generally share tables with other guests so it is quite a social affair and the owner definitely helps this with his convivial demeanour leading to quite a bit of chatter and laughter at breakfast

It is very nicely located in the middle of exmoor

There is a lovely view out over the back garden and towards the moor from most of the rooms

Now the not so good points:

There are quite a few rooms here (9 I think), so it means each room isnt individually styled. The rooms are also a little bit tired. Nothing is broken or dirty, but they arent lovely and new, but equally arent full of antique character either.
I should also add there is no TV or anything in the room - you have to use the communal area downstairs - which didnt seem very busy when we were there but with quite a few rooms it could be busy at times.

There is noise during the night from the hunting hounds which are next door - so if you are a light sleeper this is likely to be a problem

So overall it is a reasonably good place to stay and I would like to give it more than 3 stars, but I cant say it was very good either due to the rooms just not being inviting to spend longer in and the noise from the dogs.
For us it did what we wanted as it enabled us to get away on a sunny weekend in August at late notice, so was great, but if you want the perfect place to stay you may find other options are better.

We spent the first week of June at Stockleigh Lodge and discovered Exmoor for the first time. The hosts gave us a warm welcome and good ideas for walking in the area. Our room was spacious and comfortable and it was equipped for making hot drinks. We loved the view of the garden from our room.
The breakfasts were excellent and particular tastes catered for.
We did hear the staghounds in the early morning but that is probably the case all over Exford.
We will definitely be back to visit Exmoor again.

We stayed 10 nights last August & really do recommend Stockleigh Lodge: great warm welcome, very "British" atmosphere in this former hunting lodge, cosy bedroom with wonderful view on the park, plentiful tasty breakfasts adding opportunities to talk with the other guests, lots of helpful advice with the walks (including lending maps & taking us to our starting point & driving us around in a SUV looking for deer), comfy & classy lounge/reading/viewing room, private car-park, within easy walking distance of the village, shops & pubs (we advise the nearer the White Horse Inn). Great healthy walks in this quiet area. All in all, a very British and a fantastic stay !

Stockleigh lodge is a clean, friendly place to stay and is convenient for livery. It is a shame that our room was cold and the shower just dribbled. Breakfast was nice and views were nice. Gardens well kept and a short walk into Exford village.
