“best steak pie ever!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 4 June 2012

We have just arrived home from a stay at the crown ,and loved it.The bar was busy and you have to wait for your food ,but as it is home cooked , it is so worth waiting for .The lamb and the steak pie were some of the best we have had.The breakfast was just as good although I would have liked more than one slice of bacon .The prices are a bit higher than usual pub food but we were given a menu on arrival so knew what we were getting.
The room was lovely and clean, the bathroom modern.and the heated towel rail on which although it is june makes all the difference.
The staff are friendly and helpfull .The hotel has lovely gardens .
We would certainly recomend this for any one wanting to unwind.

7 of us went here for dinner after a days' long walk on Dartmoor. We had to change time of booking last minute, which caused no fuss at all (less common than you might think!). Great beers, good homemade food (at reasonable £12 - £15 a head prices), and warm (Northern!) service. Will absolutely return. Any minuses? Maybe deserts (around £7) a little pricey.

We ate here while staying at Westermill Farm in April. We chose to eat in the bar which was clearly busy. Initially it looked like there were no tables available but we were found a table and warned that food may take a while. Well, it didn't. We chose the Somerset belly of pork from the specials board and really enjoyed it. There was a large portion of slow cooked, tender meat although I would have liked a little more veg to go with it.
We finished with sticky toffee pudding which was amazing. I am glad that we ordered on portion and two spoons as the serving was enormous.
The service was excellent and the atmosphere in this rural, country pub was perfect. I would love to eat here again. Total cost £40 for 2x mains, 2x pints and 1 pudding.

This is a comment on the food offered in the'The Crown' pub in Exford.
Whilst staying locally at a B&B we ate here twice in the bar (not restaurant area.)

The bar area is unpretentious and friendly with locals enjoying a pint & a chat.

We were amazed at the quality of the food on offer at a very reasonable price-better than some restaurants I have frequented. There is a good choice with the usual 'pub favourites'-such as fish and chips or beef & ale pie together with 'daily specials' and a range of other meals. We can recommed the following: braised pork cheek; steak & ale pie (one of the best ever tasted); supreme of chicken and braised shoulder of lamb. The mains were around £12-£15 each.
Even the offering of ice-cream or sorbet selections was beautifully presented and the flavours very intense. The mango panacotta with pineapple sorbet was a real winner. Puds are £5-6.

Service was good & the staff cheery.

Overall the chef in this pub is very talented-enjoy his food.

We stayed for a couple of nights with our dog, and had a wonderful stay. We had booked a king size room. It was beautifully decorated with a very comfortable bed, and generous hospitality tray .The Bathroom was very clean, and kitted out to a high standard. We ate both in the bar and the restaurant and found the food to be absolutely delicious.(Thank you Olivier and Razza for ruining my diet) We did prefer the bar, only for the fact that we could take our dog in there with us. The staff were very attentive, nothing was too much trouble and they made sure that we had a very pleasant stay In short, The Crown is a lovely family run hotel in a beautiful part of the world. Thank you Sara and Chris, for making our stay so lovely, and will return again.

We checked in and went up to the king size room that we had booked. The bedroom was lovely, very plush with nice fittings and an amazingly comfortable bed. The bathroom, however, was awful! It was very small and had mould all over the walls which I found very discomforting. I really think that we should have been informed of this at check-in or at least asked if our room was ok at some point during our stay. Some of the bathroom amenities were half full meaning previous guests had used some which has a slightly “cheap” feel about it. The amenities tray was great although not replenished on the second day which meant we ran out of milk and tea. The bathroom amenities were also not replenished during our stay.
We were told that most of the tables in the bar were booked for dinner but we took pot luck and did find a table only to find that most tables only seemed reserved for people to have a drink or two at and they moved on after half an hour. Service was very average in the bar and we had to go up to the bar to order after waiting for a while with the menus. We were fine with this as it is a pub after all but then we were told to sit down and wait for the waitress. We eventually ordered 15 minutes later when the waitress remembered us. The food on the first night was mixed; my chicken dish was dry and felt overcooked but my other half had sausage and mash was declared excellent. The sticky toffee pudding was amazing. Food on the second night was great as was breakfast which gave a great choice and was really well cooked. An amazing selection of fuit and juices for such a small hotel.
Despite other reviews we found the service “indifferent” as if our stay did not count even though we had paid over £130 per night which we thought was expensive for the standard of the room (especially the mould on the walls).
When we checked out we fully expected to be asked if we had enjoyed our stay but staff did not seem interested.
Seems a shame because this hotel and the area had so much right about it but we would try somewhere else next time.

Room Tip: Not Room 2- Mould!
