Exmoor White Horse Inn

Reviewed 7 August 2014

Just returned from a 3 night break at the Exmoor White Horse Inn, and already, we are thinking about returning later on in the year!
Myself & my fiancee took our dog (yes, the hotel is completely dog friendly) for a walking/exploring exmoor break, and couldn't have wished for a better hotel, it felt like home from home.
Our room was lovely, and overlooked the river outside, and there was a dog bed, blanket and towel upon arrival for our 4-legged friend! The hotel grounds and bar were very welcoming areas to relax in, and the staff were all so friendly and chatty, making us feel right at home. We spent every night in the bar area, chatting to the staff who were all lovely, telling us all about the local area and life on exmoor. We ate in the bar 2 evenings, and both meals were lovely and very reasonable.
Breakfast was again, very good, buffet style with both hot traditional fry up items, and also continental choice. Again, all staff were very chatty, friendly and attentative, and we couldn't have asked for more.
The hotel itself is situated in a lovely, quaint village, which has a lovely atmosphere - we spoke to many of the locals during our stay, who were genuine, kind people, all of whom were happy to go out of their way to make us feel at home and help point out places where we should visit during our stay. If it had not have been for the knowledge of the locals and their help, we would not have found half of the amazing walks and beauty spots that we luckily enjoyed.
Exford itself is a wonderful base in which to explore exmoor, as it is centrally located and therefore many towns/places are easily accessible by car.
All in all, we had a wonderful stay, and would highly recommend the White Horse Inn to anyone. By the end of our 3 days, it felt like home from home, and we didn't want to leave such a friendly, welcoming and peaceful place - thankyou for some funny and wonderful memories, we will hopefully be back soon.....!!!

Booked in for weekend break. Room was supposed to be a superior double but turned out to be a family room. It bore no resemblance to the photos on their website. The breakfast was excellent but we can't comment on the restaurant food because we didn't try it as it was so expensive. We did have a bar meal in a dowdy looking room off the bar (The whole bar area is in need of a makeover). The food was dreadful. It looked as if it had been thrown together by someone who didn't care.
During the meal there were people at the bar swearing and being rowdy. To his credit the barman did tell them to stop it but it just added to our low opinion of the place.
All in all a lovely looking place in a great setting but..........

Room Tip: ask to see it before you move in!

We are sorry to hear you were disappointed with your room. The room in question, overlooking the village green, is very large superior room and can be used as a family room or as a double.

The bar area reflects its surroundings, with the original building being a 16th century coaching inn in the heart of Exmoor and the actual bar area has only recently been renovated, we can only apologise that it is not furnished or decorated to your taste. As far as the people that frequent the bar go, we do try to monitor behaviour and we really do apologise if any of the customers caused offense, but another reviewer has made the following comments about the bar customers ...."We spent every night in the bar area, chatting to the staff who were all lovely, telling us all about the local area and life on exmoor. We ate in the bar 2 evenings, and both meals were lovely and very reasonable.......... we spoke to many of the locals during our stay, who were genuine, kind people, all of whom were happy to go out of their way to make us feel at home and help point out places where we should visit during our stay. If it had not have been for the knowledge of the locals and their help, we would not have found half of the amazing walks and beauty spots that we luckily enjoyed".

We truly understand that everyone's expectations are different, and whilst we go out of our way to try and ensure everyone has an enjoyable stay with us, we do also understand that we cannot please all of the people all of the time, although we do still try our utmost to achieve this!

This is an excellent pub come hotel. Not cheap but the rooms are excellent with large beds and excellent service throughout. Breakfast and the Carvery are exceedingly good. It coped admirably when high demand caused some menu items to run out. They appeared to underestimated demand (first day of the school holiday) and new staff struggled to deliver the right food to the right people on our first night. This was quickly resolved and was problem free for the rest our stay.

Thank you. We appreciate your comments and understanding. As you can appreciate, we cannot predict demand for certain items, especially as it is all cooked fresh to order, but will always try to offer alternatives. We hope we can welcome you back in the future

We arrived at this establishment on sun for the carvery and it wasn't that busy but the staff couldn't cope, the carvery itself wasn't too bad but other members of our group ordered other food when it arrived the burgers were over cooked chips were hard and veg over cooked customer service was POOR and some people even walked out! The staff didn't have a clue what was on the menus or what was with the food.after that I shouldn't of gone back but we gave it a second chance today and OMG the chicken for my 12 year old son was bleeding and had to be taken away the trout I had was over cooked and the potatoes I think had been kept warn since breakfast !! And it's not cheap I walked out as I was steaming the manager offered a free coke and my wife accepted I had to stay in the car park out the way!! Do not eat here you have been warned can't comment on the hotel as we were just in for food

We have read and re-read your review many times before replying, having found your review title untrue, unfair and totally insulting. After comparing it to other reviews both before and after yours we are sure that other subscribers, as well as ourselves, wonder if you are actually talking about the same place. Our staff, all busy and hardworking, pride themselves on the service they offer, as do we the management, and this service and commitment is regularly praised and commented on as being outstanding. We can only assume that your comments are directed at the young lady that was being trained behind the bar at the time in question, and yet it was explained to everyone that training was taking place and 99.9% of customers appreciated this (we all have to start somewhere! )However, the majority of our staff are knowledgeable, many having worked here for a considerable number of years. With regards to comments on the food, whilst we appreciate that everyone's tastes are different, just because it was not to your taste does not indicate that there is anything wrong with it. And if things were really as bad as you stated, (the coke was simply offered as a gesture to your son), what a shame that you did not take it up with the Manager at the time, rather than "sitting in the car park" and then taking the easy route of putting finger to keyboard, meaning that we are then unable to rectify the situation, which rest assured we would have gone out of our way to do.

Two night stay on a first visit to return to the area of my wife's birth. Classic English hotel with much character. Greeted with a smile and welcome at reception this set the tone for a lovely visit. We were in the lodge which was initially disappointing until we opened the door to our room which was very spacious and decorated to a very high standard with lovely big bay windows. We ate first night in the restaurant which was nice and homely with good quality food. Second night in the bar, which was more basic but wholesome. Breakfast both days was good. As always staff make a hotel and the hard work and enthusiasm of the staff could not be faulted. The village itself is a bit limited but, hey, you are in Dartmoor and this is God's own country (my wife came from here after all) to by explored and enjoyed. I'd happily return.

Fantastic old charmer..ivy clad beautiful setting, staff attentive and this was just for lunch! Great to sit outside by the bridge and gently bubbling stream, no doubt a raging torrent in winter! We had the best venison sandwiches I have ever eaten. Would love to stay here in the winter, I bet it is going to be very good. I shall put another review on when I do manage to stay.

Room Tip: As I did not stay this time I cannot comment, but can't wait to do so!

My partner and I enjoyed a lovely 3 night stay in this hotel which sits in a very pretty village.
There was some confusion with our room when we arrived but this was sorted out and we were very happy with the second room we were given, the hotel is very clean and the breakfast is fantastic very good quality and plenty of it. We found all the staff to be very friendly and were given great advice from Peter and Vince on places to go and visit which tuned out to be invaluable we took our pet beagle who was made to feel as welcome as we were. Thank you for a much needed break.
