“Superb accomodation not quite matched by the food”
Reviewed 29 May 2011

The hotel was found at the last moment and chosen through the quality of reviews. The accommodation was of an excellent quality and no expense had been spared to make it a very comfortable stay. The owners were extremely attentive and made the stay quite memorable.

The only slight downside was the food was not the most inspiring. Whilst well cooked, the dishes were simple and homely and I don’t think matched the tariffs being charged. I was expecting more exciting food. They have a good wine list and knowledge of each one.

What can we say, Sam and Huw have good old-fashioned hospitality nailed! We only stayed for 2 nights, but in that short space of time we were made to feel so welcome that we felt as though we were staying with old friends. We decompressed from the stress of London life and a long drive pretty much straight away - you just get whisked off to a wonderfully relaxing place the moment you arrive!
The Old Rectory is a stunning building, decorated like a stylish home. There are plenty of public seating areas both inside and out so you can gather with a group for a natter or find a cosy spot to yourself for a bit of quiet time. It goes without saying that everything is spotlessly clean with all mod cons.
The location has some stunning coastal walks (Huw and Sam can provide maps / guidance) and is a short drive from other Devon attractions and towns. And of course Sam or Huw are always on hand with a nice cuppa when you get back from your day out!
What's more impressive is that we have pretty complicated dietary requirements, but they were taken care of with no fuss and no stress. We even had choices! (There's nothing worse than being grilled over what you can / can't eat when you sit down for breakfast!).
If you're reading this, you must be considering staying....you should go for it. It's so rare to find true hospitality in our service-oriented world and this is as good as it gets.....and when you do stay, make sure you have dinner at least once. Huw is an absolute wizard in the kitchen!
Huw and Sam must work like demons behind the scenes because they make it so effortless for their guests....so guys, if you're reading this, thank you so much for a wonderful weekend! We've already recommended you to friends and we're talking about coming back for a longer stay.

We all know the forbidding Country House Hotel, where the antiques and the repro furniture seem to demand a respectful attitude on the part of the guest. The Old Rectory is not a bit like this - style it has in plenty, but from the moment of arrival the warmth of welcome assures you of an enjoyable stay. Sam and Huw obviously put in a great deal of unobtrusive hard work, but they always have time to attend to one's individual needs.
We agree, of course, with the guests who have pointed out the delightful garden, the comfort of the accommodation, and the excellent food, so we would like to sketch in one or two extra details.
Among the variety of rooms available there are two on the ground floor, one with a comfortable walk-in shower. Although the hotel is secluded the approach road is easily navigable, and though the grounds are near the coast they are well protected from sea breezes. There is easy access to the coastal path for the active, but there is also just along the road an NT car park with splendid views for the more idle. The Vinery is no mere conservatory but houses an ancient vine which during our visit was heavy with young bunches of grapes. Parking is easy, and close to the entrance. And so on.
Above all, Sam and Huw took good care of us.

The Old Rectory is set in a lovely valley within a few minutes walk of the NT Coastal path in North Devon. The hotel is very comfortable and the setting, including the beautiful garden, is excellent. But what sets this hotel apart from most other hotels we have stayed at in recent years is the warmth of the welcome and the hospitality provided by Sam and Huw, the owners. There is a genuine sense of pleasure in running this small boutique hotel and it starts with the arrival greeting, continues through afternoon tea and cakes and through to the excellent dinner in the pretty restaurant, where the menue changes daily and features local and season produce.

Stayed here to celebrate our wedding anniversary recently and found the setting ideal.

Martinhoe is a superb location for exploring the rugged beauty of Exmoor, and the Old Rectory is the perfect base. The hotel is in a wonderfully peaceful location, the rooms are tastefully finished and the owners, Sam & Huw are excellent hosts. Dinner was outstanding - easily rivalling top class restaurant standard and the choice of quality wines was extensive.

Would recommend to others without hesitation!

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in one of our favourite locations: Exmoor. The hotel is well situated as a base for walking with an excellent walk from the door with plenty of different species of birds on the route.

The welcome was friendly. The rooms and facilities were very comfortable and the food was very good. Everywhere was clean and the garden was extensive and interesting.

What more could you ask?

Room Tip: Heddon large room, comfortable settee, vast bed

Our 3 night stay was a welcome break. We found Huw and Sam great hosts. The food was very good indeed, and we appreciated a different menu every evening of our 3 night stay, and also the personal service which we received. The room was beautiful and very peaceful. We stayed in Watersmeet suite overlooking the courtyard. The Hotel is set in lovely countryside and we enjoyed some great walks!

Room Tip: Watersmeet was very quiet with good facilities.
