“Simply the best - part 2!”
Reviewed 11 September 2011

Our first visit in April 2011 to the Old Rectory was so good that when the opportunity arose for a short break in September, there was no decision to be made...The Old Rectory ticks all the boxes.
The parts bin for superlatives is empty so we'll just re-use the previous ones - superb, wonderful, fantastic - the attention to detail is outstanding, nothing is too much trouble...Huw and Sam are brilliant hosts and meeting with other guests over drinks is an enjoyable way to spend an evening.

The recurring theme of the reviews of the Old Rectory is the hospitality of the owners, Huw and Sam, and for good reason. It really is like being welcomed into the home of friends you have known forever – they could not be more welcoming, charming or helpful and they make each and every guest feel special. The net effect is a wonderful atmosphere – where friendships are formed – not just with the hosts but between guests too, helped by the single sitting for dinner with delicious canapés served in the lounge areas beforehand.

Leaving the outstanding customer service and friendliness aside, the Old Rectory is a beautiful hotel with well appointed rooms and excellent food. The little lounge areas, conservatory and beautiful gardens provide wonderful spaces in which to make new friends or find your own space.

And the location is superb – peaceful, just a few metres from one of the nicest parts of the South West Coast path and within easy reach of some beautiful spaces too, like Lynton and Lynmouth, Dunster and the Heddon Valley.

We chose the Old Rectory as the location to celebrate our fourth anniversary and we couldn’t have chosen better.

This really is one not to be missed.

We stayed here for just one night on our way to a family wedding in Cornwall. Very nice room overlooking the beautiful gardens. Our hosts were super - made us feel right at home with their friendly welcome. Pre-dinner drinks in the garden set the scene for an excellent dinner. Breakfast was also first rate.
Can't comment on the surrounding area as we had to push on, but what we saw looked great.
Not cheap for a small country hotel, but very good value nonetheless. An excellent base for a 2-3 day stay in this very pretty area. Do take the half-board option - no question.

Well, where do I start?! My partner and I stayed at the Old Rectory over the bank holiday weekend, and, having read some reviews and seen the website, we had pretty high expectations - high expectations that were exceeded by miles! Huw and Sam are the most amazing hosts - from the moment we arrived until the moment we left they were always on hand to help, friendly, attentive, professional yet relaxed - we were made to feel so welcome, as if we were friends rather than paying guests. The hotel itself is just beautiful. We were in Beeches, one of the new rooms in the old coach house, which was spacious, stylish and wonderfully comfortable. The gardens are spectacular, and the main hotel building is splendidly decorated with an eclectic collection of artworks, and is very cosy. And then, of course, there is the food. We were on the dinner, bed and breakfast package and, my goodness, were we glad we were. Huw is an exceptional chef - dinner on the first night was out of this world, and dinner on the second night was even better. We were totally blown away by just how delicious everything was - a truly superb gastronomic experience. And Sam's breakfasts are also the best I have ever had at a hotel. Then of course there is the location - right on the North Devon coast amid some of the most spectacular scenery in the country. When we weren't eating, or chatting to our hosts, we were walking along the clifftop paths, soaking in the amazing views. Purple heather coloured cliffs with occasional yellow flashes of gorse, the hanging oak forests around Woody Bay, the beautiful little town of Lynmouth - all this and so much more within easy walking distance. We came home happy and relaxed, and with so many wonderful memories. And we will most definitely be going back. The Old Rectory is a little corner of paradise.

The Old Rectory Hotel is by far the most balanced, conformable stay we've had in a hotel. Attentive, caring staff; Beautiful, tasteful decoration; Food of a consistently high standard; But the most overwhelming thing is the tranquility, step out into the garden and hear nothing but the sounds of nature.

There was not a single problem during the entire stay. Despite the hotel being in the middle of Exmoor the complementary wifi was plenty fast enough for us to enjoy the wedding videos uploaded to youtube.

Overall the best Hotel experience we've ever had, and a stay that has certainly opened our eyes to what a Hotel can provide.

Many thanks to Huw and Sam

Having spent two nights at the Old Rectory, we can see why it won an award!
The hotel has been lovingly created around a beautiful old house that's loaded with charm and atmosphere, while being comfortable and welcoming. We were especially amazed by the grapes growing on the conservatory ceiling, which were so perfect that we assumed they were plastic at first!

The food here was wonderful, and as vegetarians, we appreciated the fact that there was still a great selection available to us and that the menu changed daily, so we never felt that we were missing out on the dining experience.

The only change I could suggest would be to ask if they could provide an information folder in the room like most other hotels -they explained times of breakfast and dinner (important as they serve everyone in a single sitting) when we arrived, which we promptly forgot and didn't want to have to walk back downstairs to ask and and look stupid into the bargain! It's also useful to have details of local attractions to hand, particularly the lesser-known ones that locals will know about.

We'd happily return to this wonderful hotel once our waistlines have returned to normal!

We spent just the night at this delightful Hotel and wished we could of stayed longer! It was our honeymoon night and we enjoyed it very much. The area surrounding the hotel is just breath taking. The owners are very proffesional and have a great eye for detail hence why their retreat of a hotal makes you feel at home. They both have a great likeability factor and make you feel at ease from the moment you arrive.
The bedroom was perfect and over looked the garden which was heaven. We dined at 7 with the other guests and the food was spectular, We have eaten at michelin resturants before and have a varied knowlege of good food and service. The food at the Old Rectory was perfect and if it wasn't for me having heartburn due to my pregnancy I would of eaten more but lucky for me the owner was quick off the mark with peppermint tea and rennies!!!! (so grateful)

Overall the hotal is just perfect for a romantic getaway and we are already planning to visit again.
