“Simply wonderful!!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 8 October 2011

Just back from a 3 night stay at The Old Rectory. Sam and Huw were lovely hosts, the food was wonderful and the atmosphere so welcoming...almost like a country house party with a group of friends! We will definitely return.

Huw and Sam have got it right. The Old Rectory offers comfort, charm and a friendly welcome combined with excellent food and spectacular surroundings. When you arrive at the hotel you are greeted like a long lost friend and given a tour of the hotel for familiarisation, then a welcoming cup of tea and cake. There are no liveried footmen with anxious coughs awaiting a fiver for opening the door and saying hello, so if that is your preferred style then stay well clear. Instead you get the effusive welcome from Huw and Sam and a very comfortable room with all the facilities you are likely to need. (a variety of room sizes and prices exist that should cater for all tastes).

The restaurant offers superb fresh food and exciting, innovative dishes brilliantly prepared by Huw, and with a daily changing menu that has enough choice to ensure you eat very well indeed. Vegetables, meat and fish are all obtained locally - the fish being straight off the day boat, which arrives so fresh that you will never be satisfied with anything else ever again. Sam has a superb recall of the extensive wine list and willingly offers excellent suggestions and guidance to match the chosen food. The wine list is well priced and not overloaded with hideously expensive options. Excellent wines can be selected without fear of breaking the bank.

Martinhoe is relatively easty to find, but you have to be prepared to have your wing mirrors polished on each side by the close proximity of the hedgerows! (Don't worry too much, there are plenty of passing places) Having said that, it is delightfully quiet and offers totally unpolluted air, which makes you feel far better straight away.

If you are looking for a short break then we would not hesitate to recommend the Old Rectory.

Room Tip: Most of the rooms offer individual benefits. Fortunately you can see them on the website, so always...

The Old Rectory is in the perfect location for a break in North Devon. You are made welcome from the moment you arrive, and it is more like staying in a country house than a hotel, with a group of friends. The breakfasts and dinners are excellent (highly recommend the home made marmilade). The dinner menu is small with a choice of 3 starters/main courses/puddings and I found it difficult to select a course, as they were all so delicious. Huw and Sam make excellent hosts, and are keen to help with directions for the tourist trail.

The rooms are a good size and very comfortable and clean.

Would highly recommend for a quiet break (and if you use Vodafone it will be quiet, as there is absolutely no signal for miles - although the hotel does have free Wifi !!!).

We enjoyed our second visit even more than our first. We had a warm welcome, and excellent and very friendly service throughout from Huw and Sam and all their staff. The food was again superb and we were able to take advantage of the beautiful garden to relax in.
We are already planning to return again

We took a four night break at the Old Rectory Hotel in mid September. We planned to use the days walking and the evenings relaxing and this worked well. The hotel proved to be an exceptional experience. From the warm, friendly welcome to the relaxed check out, all was excellent. A special mention must be made of Hugh and Sam who really know their stuff. Very knowledgeable on local walks, even assessing our needs and making appropriate suggestions. Walking the "Lorna Doone valley" and then the moors above was an exhilarating experience and a great recommendation. Finally the food, exquisite, beautifully presented and served. First class. Left us sure to go back.

We booked a two night stay for our wedding anniversary based on trip advisor comments. We were not disappointed. We stayed in St Martins a lovely ground floor room with a step in shower which was perfect as I have a disability and often struggle to find suitable high quality accommodation. The dining room and sitting rooms were all on the ground floor which was ideal. The quiet location of the hotel is perfect for a relaxing break. The food, service and hotel were truly excellent.
