“We felt like one of the family!”
Reviewed 5 May 2013 via mobile

There aren't many hotels where you get introduced to the owners and they cook all the food themselves and make you feel like one of the family.
We stayed in the 'Beeches' room for two nights. The room was spacious and beautifully furnished. The shower was extremely powerful and the complimentary Molton Brown toiletries added the finishing touch.
The newly added orangery overlooking the garden is a great place to sit and read in peace. The garden is beautiful with lots of places to sit outside and enjoy some quality time.
The food was amazing! Canapés with drinks before dinner followed by a four course menu that changes daily. Each night there is a choice of meat, fish or vegetarian. Everything is done on the premises even the breakfast marmalade - amazing considering the chef and part owner used to be a surveyor!
The hotel is down a quiet lane but is only a five minute walk to the coastal path. The Hunters Inn is a pleasant, not too strenuous, three mile walk away and should be done after the three course breakfast!
We had an excellent stay and hope to return soon.

It was a pleasure to meet you both last weekend and to have you here as our guests, particularly as you were celebrating such a special birthday!

Thank you for your very positive comments about your room and in particular the very powerful shower and the Molton Brown products. Really delighted that you enjoyed our food, which we source locally every day and for your lovely comments about the skills of our chef!

We look forward to seeing you again soon.

Huw and Sam effortlessly exude attentiveness without intrusiveness. But they combine this with an even rarer quality - anticipation of your needs.

I have been guilty as anyone of disparaging British cuisine.. I was delighted to have been proved wrong. The mushroom soup was outstanding. As was the carrot cake. And the... I will stop there but I am sure you get the idea.

Hi Sarah

We are really pleased that you took a few days out of your rather chaotic schedule to come and spend some time here for some rest and relaxation. Your review was really kind and we are delighted that we were able to prove that British Cuisine is alive and well in deepest, darkest Exmoor!

Thank you very much.

We visited the hotel for two nights either side of a visit to Lundy in early April and we also visited two years ago. Felt completely spoiled by Huw and Sam who looked after us extremely well. The evening meals were delicious, with plenty of choice and complemented by great wines. Sitting in the new Orangery is very relaxing and cosy on a rain swept evening. Our bedrooms, Heddon, Hollowbrook and Paddock, were spacious, clean and very comfortable with well equipped bathrooms. Huw and Sam went out of their way to help us with our odd timings for arrival and departure as we went to and from Lundy. We plan to go back and enjoy the coast path walk, and sit in the lovely garden when the weather improves.

Thank you for your lovely review. It was really lovely to see you again this year to be a staging post for your annual trip to Lundy.

Delighted that you will be coming back in warmer weather to enjoy the stunning coastal walks here and relax in the garden. See you soon!

We came to the Old Rectory to celebrate our fortieth wedding anniversary. We were not disappointed
It is difficult to find anything negative to say about this hotel. The rave reviews that this hotel has garnered in the past are quite justified.
The setting, off the beaten, track a stones throw from the coast path in what I consider to be one of the most undiscovered parts of the West country, and long may it remain so.!
Arriving mid morning just to park up our car we were provided with a map then walked to the glorious Heddon Mouth. A quick drink at the Hunters inn (highly recommended) before returning to the hotel to book in. Our welcome from Huw and Sam was cordial and informative. Our room (Vinery) was spotless, light and airy and extremely well equipped with toiletries hospitality tray etc. Lovely views over the extensive and well kept gardens. Afternoon tea which was included as part of our stay was a nice touch as was the pre dinner canapés both providing a value added element and served in the stunning new conservatory.
Both evenings of our stay the four course dinner was excellent, top class produce expertly cooked. I did think that the main courses could have benefited from a little more garnish, particularly the fillet of beef perhaps a couple of spears of asparagus or a pastry tartlet filled with creamed tarragon mushrooms or a small duxelle stuffed tomato and a sprig of flat-leaved parsley Added garnish would have elevated the dishes at little cost from a very good ones into the realms of haute cuisine. These are very personnel views and in no way detracted from two wonderful dinners. Breakfast was also a joy. I particularly enjoyed the Rectory take on Eggs Benedictine. At all times the service was wonderfully, friendly, attentive and knowledgeable.
One thing that did become aware to us was more then half the people staying at the time were returners some them many times which proves that this hotel has got it right.
Anyone looking for a reasonably priced peaceful break in a beautiful area of North Devon certainly could do no better than the Old Rectory.

Thank you for spending your 40th Wedding Anniversary here with us - we are delighted that you enjoyed your stay and we have shared your lovely comments with the whole team here. As you are a chef yourself, it is always a pleasure to hear that you enjoyed your food, which is all locally produced. Your suggestions regarding garnishes were really useful - thank you.

We hope to see you again soon!

The review that I wrote on our return from The Old Rectory seems to have been mislaid so I will write it again.
We spent a few days at this great hotel at the beginning of April it was our fourth visit and it gets better every time. Huw and Sam have made the place so welcoming. Cannot fault the food or the wine and we really enjoy our stays there. The rooms are very nicely decorated with comfy beds. They have everything you would need in them. We hope to go back in the summer when the weather will be a bit kinder. But even if it's not we will still have a fantastic time at such a lovely hotel.

We have just returned from our 5th or 6th stay & already trying to work out how soon we can go back! If you are looking for that perfect retreat where you will be spoiled with comfort & excellent food, this is still THE PLACE.
The new orangery is a triumph - spacious & stylish, yet warm & comfortable.
Huw, Sam & all their staff continue to get it right - no resting on laurels here!

It was great to see you, as always, on your 6th visit to the hotel. We really appreciate your loyalty and we are thrilled that so many guests, or Old Rectorians as we call them, are coming back time and time again to see us. Delighted that you like the new Orangery - it is, as you say, a real triumph.

Thank you for reviewing your stay and we look forward to seeing you both next time

We stayed here after reading good reviews and it didn't disappoint. The food was delicious from evening meal to breakfast, the restaurant cosy with subtle background music adding to the romantic atmosphere and the service excellent.

Our room was very comfortable and quiet with lovely views. Just two minor irritations, in our bathroom, the shower attachement was broken and couldn' be moved up and down and the flush was a bit hit and miss, but apart from that it was all good. This hotel really does live up to it's reviews. Well work a visit.

Thank you for your review. We are delighted that you enjoyed your weekend with us and that the hotel met your expectations.

Thank you for letting us know that you couldn't move the shower head up or down - this has been repaired by our maintenance team. Had you reported the problem whilst you were with us, this, of course, would have been rectified immediately for you. We hope it didn't spoil your stay.

As the hotel is in an idyllic remote spot our water comes from a local spring. We therefore have relatively low water pressure to refill our loos and so they can take a little longer to fill than in an urban environment. All our loos are silent fill and when flushed before completely refilling, may be "hit and miss"
