This was our third stay at Sam and Hew's little piece of heaven. As usual everything was up to the very high standards achieved in our first two visits. The food ( especially the soups ) and the other guests make this a joy of a hotel to be in. It is so much better to in a hotel where chatting is the name of the game and not being some unknown person in a large hotel bar. I look forward with great anticipation to my next visit South

This was our second visit to The Old Rectory and we came away just as rested, relaxed and refreshed as we did the first time. Owners Huw and Sam's style is more akin to that of a friendly house party than a commercial hotel. We were greeted as old friends (this was our second trip) and gather together with the other guests at 7.00pm for drinks and canapes before being invited in to dinner at 7.45pm. Our room, The Heddon Suite, was large and bright, dual aspect windows and a distant sea view. This time, the quality of light was so good, we could even see the Welsh coastline across the Bristol Channel. The bed and the settee were super-comfortable and we felt both indulged and at home. The day begins with the perfect breakfast - whether your preference is for full English (Exmoor) or something less traditional, we were set up for the day and needed nothing more before the complimentary tea and cake in the afternoon. But dinner is the highlight of the day; portions were perfectly sized, enabling us to enjoy all four courses without feeling bloated. Particular favourites were stir-fried tiger prawns, brill with caper sauce and rhubarb fool - and the cheeses, from a local supplier (who, we understand offers online discounts to Old Rectory customers) is wonderful. Beyond the haven of the hotel, the coastline is spectacular offering gentle strolls or more adventurous hikes. RHS gardens, Dartington glass factory, Exmoor and the lovely town of Barnstaple are all nearby. We'll never tire of it - and will return again and again. Often when you leave a place you say you'll return, but when the time comes to book, you visit somewhere new. But The Old Rectory is different. We've already booked our third trip - and know that we'll keep going back again and again because there's something truly special about this place.

This was our second stay at The Old Rectory. Our room was superb, as was the food, the wine and the staff. We also enjoyed chatting to the other guests over afternoon tea and pre and post dinner. Many thanks to all for making us feel very welcome and for looking after us so well. We'd love to return again.

Fantastic 4 day break - just what was needed after a long wet Winter.
Had to alter our dates at last minute due to unfortunate circumstances - Huw and Sam were kind enough to accomodate us; nothing was too much trouble for them. Will be returning for more of their generous hospitality!
