My wife and I recently spent two lovely nights at The Old Rectory in Martinhoe. It was a double celebration of a birthday and our wedding anniversary. It proved to be the perfect choice for us.
The hotel gives one the feeling of joining a friendly house party . We met other guests for tea and then again for drinks before a splendid dinner in the charming and quiet dining room. Some guests rekindled past friendships with others and staff , showing an unsurprising pattern of returning visitors. We will certainly join them. The countryside around this unpretentious gem is beautiful and the pace of life slows down while one is there ! Thank you Sam and Hugh, well done and more thanks for the Champagne you gave us for our Anniversary !

We visited the Old Rectory for our Wedding Anniversary for 4 nights in May which was made extra special by Sam, Huw and the whole team. We stayed in the Arlington Suite which is a lovely spacious room in the coachhouse. The food and service in the restaurant was first class. The whole experience was exceptional with fantastic coastal walks straight from the front door. If you want a relaxing break in a superb setting then this is the place for you, we will definitely be back.

Very pleased to have found The Old Rectory.

We had a thoroughly enjoyable stay and wished we had stayed longer. No complaints whatsoever.

The hotel inside and in particular the Orangery was lovely. The Orangery being the perfect place to read if the weather was inclement.

The Gardens were beautiful and hopefully when we return the weather will allow us to sit out in them.

We opted to have dinner at the hotel every night and were very pleased to have done so. The wine list was varied and good value for money.

We would recommend staying here wholeheartedly!

Well, the other reviewers appear to have a point.......this place is pretty special. Exceptional food, drink, decor and service, delivered in a relaxed environment by two absolutely charming hosts. Added to which, the coastal walk from the hotel is like nothing I have seen in the UK - truly astonishingly beautiful.

Room Tip: Paddock was lovely - huge bed.

.....they would locate the hotel near the sea with great coastal walks, the hotel would be a charming building - full of character, not too big and with stunning 3-acre gardens. You'd be greeted as long time friends by two of the friendliest and most competent hosts who would then show you to a beautifully appointed room/suite, complete with all mod cons but with a hushed ambiance to trigger to soothing process. If it was circa 3pm you would be served tea/coffee in the orangery or on the terrace with the option of a slice of home made cake and then left to drift still further from the cacophony of everyday life that you set out to escape from. In the evening you would either sit and chat with your partner over pre-dinner drinks or commune with the couple sat nearest to you, who would invariably be on the same cathartic journey into relaxation and drawn from an eclectic mix of backgrounds but all sharing a growing sense of well being. A four course meal of locally sourced produce would be served, tailored where needed for vegetarians and varied daily. It would be wonderful food complemented by a excellent wine list and served with finely balanced skill and bonhomie by one of your hosts, aided and abetted by friendly, competent waitresses. After dinner, coffee and drinks and a whiff of something stronger if desired, will be served in one of the lounges or perhaps in the splendid orangery, where further convivial chat or quiet contemplation are available before retiring to bed to recharge the batteries in anticipation of a new day of healthy, bracing walks or calmer pursuits in the locale but all in the knowledge that the ingredients the made yesterday so special are all there to be enjoyed on your return.

Carlsberg don't do boutique hotels in Devon, but if they did, they would take a very close look at what Huw Rees and Sam Prosser have achieved (and continue to proffer) and then go back to making beer, because when it comes to running an award winning boutique hotel - these two gentlemen have well and truly set the benchmark and we (my wife and me and a growing band of frequently returning "Old Rectorians") are eternally appreciative of that!.

Room Tip: Check the website - the rooms are all different and all comfortable.
