“Another lovely stay at Old Rectory”
Reviewed 11 August 2014

Having found this little gem of a hotel four years ago, we have made an annual visit and have enjoyed every occasion. The hotel offers comfortable and stylish accommodation with a relaxing ambiance. We will be visiting again to enjoy the excellent service and warm welcome which is always given by the owners.

We have stayed at the Old Rectory a few times now and have very much enjoyed each of our visits. This one was no exception. We were welcomed on arrival by Hugh and treated to a suite for our one night stay which was very quiet, comfortable and well equipped. We loved the afternoon tea with a special birthday cake for my wife in the new conservatory. We enjoyed pre-dinner drinks, also in the conservatory and the dinner in the excellent dining room was a delight with a good choice of locally sourced produce. An excellent night's sleep was followed by a very well prepared and presented breakfast. The service was helpful and courteous at all times. We will be back!

This place is a real gem and provides the ideal recipe for a successful getaway from the rat race. Set in beautiful grounds it provides very comfortable accommodation with superb food and drink. The daily changing evening menu provides fresh, locally sourced ingredients prepared to an extremely high standard and the wine list provides an excellent and sensibly priced choice. The atmosphere is always welcoming and friendly; the staff are extremely helpful and nothing is ever too much trouble. Drinks and canapés are served before dinner which provides a great opportunity to meet your fellow guests. The owners, Huw and Sam, are tremendously entertaining hosts and really provide the added value that makes The Old Rectory truly stand out from its competitors.

We stayed at the Old Rectory while visiting North Devon. We had heard a lot of good things about it and had high expectations. We were not disappointed. The owners Huw and Sam and their staff went out of their way in making our visit memorable. The decor of the hotel was lovely and our room was welcoming and cosy. The food was fabulous with a great choice of wines. We will certainly go back.

We booked our stay here to jointly celebrate our honeymoon and a special birthday some time ago, and our anticipation was only heightened by the increasing number of prestigious awards the hotel kept picking up in the intervening period. We were not disappointed. The welcome we received was very warm, and tea and cake (which became a daily ritual) in the beautiful garden set the scene for a wonderfully relaxing holiday. Our room (Lawns) was very comfortable and had a lovely view over the gardens, and the stunning bouquet of flowers to celebrate our special occasion(s) is still going strong over a week later. The other spaces (and we tried them all) around the hotel are all beautifully furnished, though our favourite was the new conservatory, which spans the entire rear of the old building and brings with it a beautiful flow to the entire building. The garden is a joy, lots of interesting planting and space to relax in. The food was exceptional, a daily changing dinner menu showcasing local produce, leaving us both full enough to just about manage the short waddle upstairs to the room, via a brief tea stop off in the conservatory. And although we are complete wine ignoramuses, each wine we tried was good (the house Nero in particular), and reasonably priced. A pre-dinner white port also went down very nicely. Breakfasts were equally good, we sampled all the meat/fish/egg/hollandaise combinations, and the fruit compote/yoghurt/honey option was a great lighter alternative. The location of the hotel is excellent, we parked up on arrival (Tuesday) and then did not use the car at all until we left on the Friday. There are numerous walks along the coast path and other National Trust paths pretty much straight from the hotel door. We also stopped at the Broomhill Sculpture Gardens which is about half an hour away on the way home (near Barnstaple) which we would also thoroughly recommend both for the sculpture garden and for the food, though I’d advise going on departure day as I am not sure our stomachs could have handled a large lunch on top of the Old Rectory food offer. To echo what everyone else has written, Huw, Sam and the team have created a very special place where there is a collective shared experience of both luxury and comfort, and where everyone feels liberated to talk with one another. Although every good review will make it just that tiny bit harder to secure a room in the future, this hotel very much deserves all the praise that comes its way and we really hope to be able to return in the future subject to finding (willing) volunteers to palm our children off to. Anyone?

We have just returned from a week's stay at your lovely hotel. First class accommodation, food and location, we even got to test three of the bedrooms due to the length of our stay, all perfect. Absolutely nothing was too much trouble for Sam and Huw, who have a winning formula and a good sense of humour. Having enjoyed it so much we have already booked a return visit for next year.

Room Tip: All perfect and lovely. High standard of decor and beds very comfortable.

We have just spent just 3 nights at the wonderful Old Rectory Hotel and can't wait to go back. Huw and Sam are great hosts and create a lovely, warm and friendly atmosphere. The food and wine were excellent and the hotel was perfect in every way. Great walks straight from the front door. Loved it!
