“Simply the best”

We recently stayed 3 nights at this wonderful hotel, and can honestly say we could not fault it. The attention to detail is first class, as are Huw and Sam who run it. My husband and I wanted 3 days of relaxation, good food and comfortable surroundings and this is exactly what you get here. The rooms are decorated to a high standard and the garden is very quirky and peaceful with plenty of nooks and crannies to sit in, weather permitting. We will not hesitate to return next year, in fact it could become an annual event.

We were supporters from last year now feel it is gting too pricey for what it has to offer. The owners are delightful and the food is good but there are few amenities.
£180 for a double half board £17-20 for 2 double G&T'S is high..

OldRectoryHotel, owner at The Old Rectory Hotel, responded to this review, 30 July 2009
We were sorry to read this review from this customer who was a return visitor to us, having stayed here last year in the same room. We are surprised about his perception that “the hotel has become too pricey for what it has to offer” as this is simply not true and would answer his comments, which we believe are unjustified, as follows:

1. Our 2009 tariff is the same as that in 2008. It has not increased since last year when he last visited and therfore we are confused by his claim that we have become “too pricey”

2. We believe that the price charged for a double gin and tonic (£8.60) is not “overpriced” and justified. We serve hotel (35ml) measures of spirit rather than pub (25ml) measures. This customer ordered double premium Plymouth gins, for which we charge £3.50 for a 35ml measure.

A 25ml measure at our local pub costs £2.60 and therefore on a pro rata basis the same gin at The Old Rectory Hotel is 14p cheaper than the same volume at the local pub! We believe that we offer good value, particularly as we serve complimentary canapés with our drinks.

We consider the scores given in this review for rooms, value and service to be unreasonable and without foundation. This customer was a valued returning guest who slept in the same bedroom and who wrote a very favourable review (which now appears to have been removed) following his first stay with us.

We are really saddened by this review and can only conclude that this gentleman has been upset by the price of a double gin and tonic – without realising that he had in fact bought larger than standard double measures, which is clearly indicated on our bar tariff.

Please do not go there, we do not feel bad to say this because we like the place so much, we want to keep it to ourselves. You will not find a more accommodating place in the Devon. We are still dreaming of the eggs benedict in the morning and the delicious 4 course dinners in the evening.
We will come back as soon as possible just to enjoy more local, fresh food and the divine tranquility at the little pond in the garden. A true gem.

Huw and Sam offer a really special welcome at this lovely small hotel. The rooms are beautifully decorated and spotlessly clean. Breakfast and dinner were excellent. The hotel and gardens are truly lovely and Huw and Sam have created a really relaxing and enjoyable environment.

We had a fantastic couple of nights away, celebrating our silver wedding aniversary. The hotel, the room, the food, the setting - everything was great. The thing that added a whole extra dimension to the stay, however, was the welcome, friendiness and humour of the hosts. It's the little touches that they add that you cannot measure, but make all the difference. We left Huw and Sam, joking about whether we would see them on our 50th aniversary, but somehow I think we will be back much sooner than that !

This is our third visit to The Old Rectory and we have not been disappointed in any way. Huw & Sam continue to be superb hosts, the food is still fantastic, the location is perfect - beautiful, peaceful and just what the two of us needed to re-charge our batteries.
If you are looking for an idyllic gastronomic getaway, this is the place for you - we will definitely be returning!

The beautiful South African and I had a super time at the boys' hotel. I remember a loud monologue on the subject of which route to take around the Western Cape, a pretty extensive critique of punishing inventory costs for the modern sommelier and a little confusion over the breakfast cheese sauce. And some anti-posh London slating, probably deserved. And general agreement that horses are evil and stink. Gooooood place. Enjoy the breakfast vs dinner rivalry: it's supposed to be friendly, but it's not at all. Guest should do all they can to keep this going. One of them has the edge.
