This was by far the best hotel we have stayed at in the uk. Huw and Sam treated us like royalty at every moment. The food was fabulous and the whole hotel was spotless and sumptiously decorated and furnished. The location was perfect for walking, sightseeing and simply lazing around. Didn't want to leave!

We cannot but agree with the other reviews. Huw and Sam are wonderful hosts, nothing is too much trouble and they both work so hard to make your stay special. Our bedroom was large and tastefully furnished. Downstairs is a lovely conservatory and two lounges, outside a very pleasant garden awaits.
The food, which is really special, so well cooked using local produce and beautifully presented, is served in a calm and relaxing dining room.
We will certainly be going back.

The Old Rectory is almost too good to be true. The owners Huw and Sam have done a phenomenal job with everything. Our bedroom was large, with a comfortable super-king bed and a spacious wardrobe. Bathroom was also spacious and modern. Downstairs there are several different lounges, all decorated beautifully, with comfortable seating and pleasantly free of the meaningless clutter found in so many other hotels. We had a number of small but unusual special requests and Huw and Sam were very responsive and accommodating. The meals at The Old Rectory are in a league of their own: Huw is the chef and his food is superb, and Sam manages the wine list and has chosen an assortment of excellent wines at very good value. We stayed for four nights on half-board, and every evening there were several wonderful menu choices, all using local meat, fish and produce. Desserts were sublime. Breakfasts were equally delectable. Everything is freshly cooked to order, always. Like everything else at the hotel, the dining room is spacious and comfortable. The hotel is located in a very remote bit of Exmoor, near the north coastal path, and makes a wonderful calm haven to return to after a day of walking. We have every intention to go back and stay for longer. I have mixed feelings about submitting this review as I hope The Old Rectory can maintain its superb level of hospitality and accommodation, without becoming so popular that one can never get a booking!

We arrived a little weary after a longish journey to be met by Huw who had been busy looking at his new vegetable patch! After checking us in we were shown around the hotel (ground floor as thats where our room was) - 2 nice sitting rooms, lovely dining room and conservatory where we were served tea and lovely warm date and walnut cake. Dinner was beautifully cooked by Huw- attention from Sam and his lovely assistant was faultless! Our room was very nice with big bed with blankets and white crisp linen (personally I prefer duvets but that's personal choice). Bathroom was a good size with a full bath and shower. Breakfast was excellent - again Huw looked after us.

We returned from a long walk and were greeted like old friends by both Sam and Huw. Again dinner was marvellous (rack of lamb to die for!).

I don't normally do reviews of hotels but felt that this one should be although I just hope that we can get a room when we next book!!

The hotel was very easy to find and was in a delightful setting. Our balcony room was beautifully and tastefully done. Everywhere was immaculate. The garden and surounding area were also superb.
Huw and Sam were attentive and friendly. The food was superb and we could not fault the evening meal. Everything was delicious. Breakfast was very nice although it would be good to be able to help oneself to things such as cereal and fruit rather than to have to choose everything off a menu.
The room was really tastefully styled. The only things we lacked was a shaver point, somewhere to put the soap whilst in the shower and hooks to hang coats (silly things to mention but all add up to make a room more user friendly.)
Being able to open the balcony doors and usher in a cool breeze at night was lovely. The tempura mattress was really comfortable and supportive as well.
The conservatory was a relaxing place to sit especially after a long walk and the afternoon tea and cake was absolutely wonderful. These men can cook!!!
All in all a lovely restful mini break for us. Sam and Huw made us feel welcome. We didn't gel with the other guests particularly who generally weren't up for a chat but we had a lovely time.

We booked this hotel looking for a quiet getaway in Devon for our wedding anniversary. The Old Rectory Hotel lived up to our expectations and more. Huw and Sam were excellent hosts and extremely attentive to our needs. We booked B&B and if we return would definitely opt for the dinner each night. We had dinner at the hotel on Satjurday evening which was absolutely delicious. Our room was very comfortable and spotlessly clean. All in all a lovely weekend.

Having been going to Exmoor for around 30 years, we're really glad to find The Old Rectory in such good hands. Huw and Sam, with Edie, could not have looked after us any better. We thoroughly enjoyed all the diners and breakfasts which set us up for our walks each day and cannot fault the hotel in any way. The ambience suited us down to the ground and we love the way the public rooms and bedrooms are decorated.
