“Luxury hideaway in the gorgeous Devon country-side”
Reviewed 11 June 2010

Huw and Sam provide such a friendly welcome at this luxury boutique hotel tucked away in the country-side near the Devon coast. The food is definitely the high point - Huw's cooking is absolutely delicious - haven't tasted such a wonderful bread and butter pudding for a very long time! The rooms are smartly decorated and very comfortable although I could have done with more of a power shower.

The only other comment is that as the hotel is small the dining room is quite quiet so we felt a bit self-conscious during dinner - not the place for a private conversation! However, that is only a minor point in an otherwise fantastic visit. We were made to feel really at home and will definitely be returning again. A good reason to visit this beautiful part of the countryside.

You would be correct!
This was our second visit since Huw and Sam have been in charge and they maintain and improve on their standards year on year.
We spent four nights in the 'Paddock' suite in early June - plenty of space, tastefully furnished and with a large bathroom. That suite overlooks their delightful neatly trimmed garden and the Rhododendron bushes were spectacular this year.

As expected, the food was excellent and locally sourced - do ask Huw to prepare his famous stuffed mushrooms - and Sam's choice of wines very much appreciated.

Once again the service was laid-back but superb, the ambience relaxing and restful and the varied clientèle always interesting and excellent company .

This small but charming hotel deserves its fast growing reputation - Huw and Sam have hit on the the perfect combination in a beautiful setting..

We can't recommend this hotel highly enough. Everything was perfect: the style and comfort of the accommodation, the quality of the food and cooking and the area is really beautiful but not too crowded . The attention to detail is second to none but this hotel is not posh or stuffy. The owners are very congenial but understand that you are on holiday and also need your personal space to relax. Nothing is too much troube and all your needs have been thought of. A real gem.

This is our second stay with Huw and Sam.They really are the perfect hosts. Nothing is too much trouble, they are warm, friendly and funny. Everything is done to a high standard, with great attention to detail. They continue to update and refurbish. The hotel has a relaxed modern style. The rooms are beautifully appointed and have new bathrooms with fluffy white towels and White Company toiletries. We arrived in the afternoon and knew what awaited us!! Tea and cake served in the garden, heaven!!

The food is exceptional. There is a lot sourced locally. Huw prepares and cooks the dinner whilst Sam will help with the wine if necessary. The wine is served with the most delicious canapes whilst you choose from the menu and chat to fellow guests. Sam cooks the wonderful breakfasts which are both tasty and imaginitive.

After all this delicious food Sam and Huw will happily provide maps and directions in order for you to walk it off! There is some spectacular scenery around this area, with great cliff top walks.

So if you want to be very well looked after in an away from it all setting The Old Rectory is for you.

Hope to see you again before too long

If you ever want to feel like a cherished guest at a select country house weekend, where the house in question is wonderfully stylish yet also comfortable and welcoming, in stunning countryside surroundings, with friendly, attentive and thoughtful service and out of this world food, then we would point you in the direction of the Old Rectory Hotel.
This was our 10th wedding anniversary and without going over the top it really is hard to think of a better way to celebrate. The hotel is delightful, the garden is just as good and the walk from the hotel to the nearest pub is a hidden gem - a wonderful mix of woodland and cliff side pathways.
Huw and Sam are wonderful hosts. The food is exquisite, the wine is beautifully chosen, the rooms are gorgeous. It's the ideal place to kick back, relax and be very well looked after indeed. Mark and Fiona, London.

Having grown up in Braunton on the North Devon coast, we were looking for somewhere quiet, romantic and special to spend the Bank Holiday weekend. As usual, we used Tripadvisor to pick a few finals and ended up deciding on The Old Rectory.

Having stayed in some of the UK's leading hotels, including Chewton Glen and Limewood in the New Forest, I can honestly say this place has the total recipe for "home away from home" down to the letter. From the moment you arrive, you are treated as one of the family; Sam and Huw are the perfect hosts, nothing is too much trouble. They obviously love what they do, and it shows.

The level of cleanliness and attention to detail in this hotel is simply outstanding. The rooms (we had 2 during our stay) were immaculate, and both had beautiful views over the wonderful grounds to the rear. We dined on a half board basis and were treated to some wonderful dishes using fresh, seasonal produce.

The location is breathtaking, pitched right on the outskirts of Exmoor National Park, with some amazing coastal walks just a stone's throw away. We spent the Sunday walking around idyllic Lynton and Lynmouth, before taking a short drive to the Valley of the Rocks; a truly dramatic landscape that has to be seen to be believed.

If you are looking for a true escape to the country, then you won't be disappointed. The only problem with this hotel is that you won't want to leave! We will certainly be back.

Arriving at The Old Rectory, you have to concede that the old Rectors knew how to live! We were staying just two nights in the Heddon Suite and found it comfortable and spacious with a very smart bathroom. The decor and furnishings were all immaculate and tasteful. The view over the fields to the sea was delightful, admittedly on a gloriously sunny day. There was a large screen TV with Freeview stations, a laptop on the landing with free internet access and a 'lending library' with dozens of paperbacks .And I haven't mentioned the super garden.
Sam and Huw were very welcoming and nothing was too much trouble. The food was really superb- pre-dinner drinks with light nibbles, a choice of three starters followed by soup and again a choice of three main courses, meat, fish or vegetarian. Dessert or cheese to finish and everything we had was delicious.
The Hotel is in a tiny hamlet surrounded by magnificent scenery giving the opportunity for long lovely walks, nature watching and generally chiling out. Huw and Sam are always ready to suggest walks and places to see and even provide maps. Would we go again? You bet!
