This was my first visit to North Devon and we could not have stayed in a more perfect hotel.
The hotel is absolutely beautiful and the attention to detail is second to none.
I was anxious about staying here as it is very intimate, I thought it would be too imposing, but Huw and Sam are the perfect hosts!
Even when I managed to lock the bathroom door without being inside, they made me feel completely comfortable.
Breakfast, dinner and afternoon tea - you must try them all! Food is fabulous as well as Sam's advice on choice of wine.
Will definitely be back again !

W stayed for 3 nights, the place is quiet, in a beautiful setting, with gardens to relax in, the food was tremendous, breakfast and dinner, not to be missed. Only 8 bedrooms so very intimate if you want it to be. The standard of design and cleanliness was perfect.

Staying here was such a relaxing experience and towards the end of the weekend you realised how much more energy you had. A brilliant combination maybe due to the good food, the peaceful atmosphere conducive to a good night's sleep, the friendly but not obtrusive hosts or something more indefinable. Whatever it is it works!

To describe any of the specific elements of this charming little place seems insufficient. It's a lovely traditional old house in a peaceful place, hosts are discreetly attentive, food superlative, beds coma inducing, gardens pleasant and interesting. But the whole is much greater than the sum of these mere parts. Huw and Sam both gave up conventionally successful careers to run The Old Rectory as a lifestyle choice and are putting their considerable joint knowledge and energy into doing it for their own satisfaction absolutely as well as they can. Therefore everything here is done with an eye on the best it can be, with good judgement and superb taste, rather than just 'margins'. I like to imagine their accountant developing a twitch like Dreyfus in Return of the Pink Panther as he/she looks over their latest outgoings and proposed investments. Beware, you will eat too much! Though there's plenty of lean meat, fish, fresh veg and fruit etc alongside the best puddings in the universe and scrummy wines and sauces you will want the recipe for. Some people wonder why the breakfast is menu based rather than self service. I suspect Huw would rather saw off his own arm than let a breakfast he has carefully prepared congeal on a hot-plate. Pack your sensible shoes, the walks are gobsmacking along breathtaking cliffs and through green woody valleys. It's just magic!

Lovely scenery, good food and hospitable people. Would have appreciated more frequent change of music in dining room, same disc 50% of the meals.

Our second visit to this tranquil haven of peace! Good food, great hospitality and attention to detail that is hard to match. Huw and Sam have created an atmosphere that is an amalgamation of a stylish country home coupled with an un stuffy relaxed atmosphere. We were (again) very well looked after and relaxation is instant after you walkin the door! Our car stayed in the car park....you can walk in every direction from the door and take in some of Britains most stunning coastal scenery. in a word...wonderful!

Desire peace and quite, first class food and service and home comforts then look no further. Add stunning coastal walks, the most comfortable hotel bed we have ever slept in then it all adds up to a perfect wedding anniversary weekend. Thanks Huw and Sam we will return once our waist lines have recovered.
