We recently held our wedding reception at Tarr Steps following a delightful stay we had previously in the Winter months. Its great here anytime of year, cozy in the winter and lovely colours and full and blooming in the summer. Beautiful !! It was truly amazing and everything was just perfect down to the finest detail.

The staff are friendly, helpful and go above and beyond to make you feel welcome. The food, in my opinion, should be Michelin star rated and there is plenty to chose from on the menu.

The rooms are very clean and up to todays modern standards and even the little finishing touch in the bathroom and rooms are fab. Let alone its stunning and tranquil position. This really is an A+++++ B&B, and we have stayed and travelled to many places. The walks are delightful along the river, and make sure you have the breakfast, its also delicious and plentiful.

We drove 3 and a half hours from were we had our church wedding service just to bring our guests here, to show them this place. Tarr Steps really went above and beyond to make our day special, it was faultless. Considering the numbers they had to cater for, the food was perfect. The staff were brilliant too and the service was 5 *. I would highly recommend Tarr steps for any occasion, whether its a weekend break, a holiday (there is plenty to do if you like the outdoors) or for a special occasion such as a wedding.

These guys have seriously got it right !!

Thank you Tarr Steps :-) we will certainly be back and I'm certain our guests will too! - Celeste, Lee and Harry

We stayed at Tarr Farm Inn for 3 nights in August 2013 to celebrate our anniversary. This was our second stay, the first being in 2010. We got a good deal by booking a few days before arriving. This is very much pot luck but we noticed before that there were often some deals to be had in the summer months. You probably won’t find deals in autumn or winter as the Inn is very popular with shooting parties and is usually fully booked over the shooting season.
The rooms are compact but comfortable and well equipped with double or twin beds, television, fridge, tea and coffee making facilities with fresh milk and homemade cookies daily, bottled water – still and carbonated, iron and ironing board, lockable gun safe, hairdryer, large bottles of toiletries and an emergency items kit (sewing kit, pen, toothbrush, shower cap, comb etc). The only slight niggle is that the walls are very thin! We much preferred our upstairs room this visit as it was more private.
As a resident you automatically have a table reserved for you for the evening in the Inn’s residents’ dining room which doubles as the residents lounge with 4 large sofas – ideal for relaxing with an after dinner coffee and chocolate. This is also where you take breakfast. The main evening menu is on the Inn’s website and is supplemented each night by a shorter specials menu. Some of the dishes we had were Salmon Gravlax, Pan Fried Fois Gras, Baked Mozzarella in Parma Ham, Pigeon Breasts, Smoked Trout Salad, Braised Belly Pork, Mussels in Cream sauce, Moroccan Lamb, half a lobster – we only managed it to the sweet course once and shared a platter of 8 cheeses, biscuits and grapes. But the biggest treat was venison. We had noticed this wasn’t on the menu so we asked on our booking form if it was possible. The Inn responded very quickly advising that although it wasn’t usually on offer they would see what they could do/ no promises. When we arrived for dinner on our anniversary we were greeted with “We’ve got something special for you!” What a great treat – Thank you to all the staff for making this special!
Breakfast was just as delicious – Cereals, Fruit Juices, Fresh Berry Compote and the creamiest yoghurt I have tasted outside Greece, Full cooked English, Scrambled Eggs and Smoked Salmon, Porridge with cream, Smoked Haddock with Poached Eggs, Toast – enough to see you through until the evening. We also had a Cream Tea with some of the largest scones I have ever had (it doesn’t come with butter) and a snack lunch of Ciabattas.
The Inn is in a beautiful part of Exmoor but be aware it is very popular in summer with day-trippers and families setting up for a day beside the river so it gets very busy. There is residents parking but it is limited. However, after 7pm when everyone has gone serenity returns. There is little light pollution here so on a clear night the sky is stunning – both our visits have coincided with the Perseid meteorite showers and we have been lucky enough to see some fantastic shooting stars as well as satellites hurtling across the night sky. And it’s lovely falling asleep to the sound of owls hooting to each other!
Tarr Farm Inn isn’t cheap. The full price for the rooms is perhaps a little expensive as are some of the bottles of wine on offer. Our food and drink bill for 3 nights came to around £300 but then we didn’t stint, having pre dinner drinks, and a bottle of wine each night. For us it was a special treat and well worth it.

Room Tip: Upper floor rooms have more privacy, paticularly in summer when there many day trippers.

We were looking for a late booking in Devon that was very dog friendly. Having found a vacancy at Tarr Steps Inn on-line and then told no vacancy we rang them. The staff, in particular Stacey and Hilary were brilliant in sorting a room out for three nights. When we arrived with large dog trailer the staff again did everything to ensure trailer had a shady spot and dogs had all they needed. Throughout our stay we had fabulous food, really well appointed room, stunning walks and attended too by cheerful helpful staff. Probably the best b&b/Inn we have ever stayed at. Tracey, Hilary and all the staff thank you.

We stopped off for lunch whilst visiting Tarr Steps. It has a lovely garden where dog owners can sit, with great views over the forest and ford.

I had a brie ploughmans, which comes on a wooden board with pickles, chutney, thick soft bread, and a massive wedge of Somerset brie. Absolutley delicious for about £8.

The staff are pleasant and efficient, a lovely place.

The isolation and peace we found at Tarr Farm was exactly what we were looking for, for a romantic weekend away. The beauty of the surrounding countryside is breathtaking.

We were warmly received at Tarr Farm Inn after a long drive. Our room (number 6- Cuckoo) was perfect and bathroom spotless with very high quality organic toiletries.

Dinner was to die for. We ordered the wood pigeon and ham hock terrine appetisers and the Devon Ruby ribeye for our mains. Tarr Farm has a very extensive wine list. Bin 64 the Organic Cotes du Rhone was a great accompaniment to our amazing dinner, and we were spolit for choice when it came to ordering champagne for the room.

Breakfast was delicious and was the perfect start to a day exploring the West Country.
