Spent 3 nights at the hotel from friday 24th and was pleasently surprised. The bedroom was clean and tidy sheets and towles clean and fluffy I dont go away to sit in a bedroom so it served its purpose. I found the food to be very good hot and well served by a polite and smileing young waitress. as we only booked a week before they must have known they were changing there all inc to a 4 drinks a day format so i dont no why they did'nt tell me at time of booking . We go self drive but it seems people who came by coach paid £20 00 less than me.I will go back as i find these hotels good value for money.

Dirty unkempt hotel. Having stayed for a weekend recently with 3 friends, I would advise anyone thinking of booking this place with Shearings not to bother, unless you like to spend the whole weekend without hot water, despite reporting it, and in the grubbiest place it has ever been my misfortune to stay. Corridors, stairs and public areas an absolute disgrace. Doors with dirty fingermarks on them, with obviously no attempt to clean them. The lift is a positive health hazard, again dirty, tiny and quite frightening to use. Doors propped open by domestic staff, creating a fire hazard. Food basic, dining room not good, entertainment area grubby and too small. Don't order the packed lunches as advertised, they also were disgraceful and did not resemble the picture on the leaflet at all. All in all, would never travel with Shearings again.

Room Tip: Don't go there!

I booked a Shearing 4 day half board "holiday" in a sea view room. The view of the sea was the only thing acceptable of the experience. I wish I had read the reviews before we booked, but the problem is, that people give good as well as bad reports, so the visit was anticipation without full expectations of a good holiday break. I list the problems.
Coach journey time 8hrs 30 minutes.
Bedroom shabby plaster falling off the walls and central heating US. The supplied oil heater worked, once we found a power point inside the wardrobe. Bathroom cramped, small shower stall and mildewed tiling. the shower thermostatic control did not work, hot one minute freezing cold the next [due I suppose to other guests trying to use their showers].Sleeping was only possible by taking a sleeping pill, the mattress had 3 springs on the loose which prodded one as you moved in the bed.
The lift was noisy and with hard to operate double doors.
On to the food, breakfast was just OK, dinner absolutely awful, words cannot describe. The staff were used to people leaving their meals, because no comment was made as to why the food was left on the plate. Fortunately we had planned to eat out on 2 evenings so we survived.
You were not meant to stay in the hotel [guest house] after 9am as what heat there was in the lounge etc was turned off, so to keep warm during the day,if one did not want to go on a coach tour, finding a pub with heating to keep warm was the only solution. The entertainment room has not been redecorated since the 60's. On the ceiling where the ceiling tiles were replaced this was with a cheap alternative material of a different colour. Where the tiles had not been replaced, the stains remained, terribly depressing.
Conclusion terrible waste of money and the only plus feature was the cheerful staff, never ever again would I go on another Shearing holiday

i suppose to other persons turning on their shower]. Impossible to use.

Room Tip: pay extra for a refurbished bedroom and eat out

This has been the second Shearings holiday for my wife and I. The first being to the I.O.W.

First off, what's with all the whinging and moaning from some about this Bay Hotel?
Where else can you have a local coach pick up, a 4 day break, half board, a free excursion and free drinks each evening all for around £35 per day? Come on, get a life and just enjoy!

This hotel is great. Clean and with a superb, uninterupted view across the estuary.
The room we were allocated was as requested on the second (top) floor, but was right opposite the lift entrance. It would have been o.k. but the lift is very noisy so we asked to be moved....No problem, we were given two sets of keys to try different rooms. We settled on Room 50, what a gem, nice and big with great views.

Our first evening meal found us sharing a four seater table with another couple...talk about moan. We had not sat down or introduced ourselves before they both started moaning to us about just about everything. It was so bad we asked to be moved from them. Again no problem. What a pair. The husband even spoke to me later and started to complain about the wall paper and how bumpy it was!!

Our bedroom was clean and tidy and kept so each day by a cheery chambermaid.

The food was typical Shearings fare....Enough of a choice, well cooked and well presented.

The hotel itself was really nice. O.K. the decor was a bit faded here and there but what the heck, the place was clean, warm and the staff very helpful and hard working.

No complaints but here's some observations.....

The lift needs sorting, it is quite noisy.
The entertainment room plus bar is at basement level, as is the dining room and both might be a little claustrphobicand hot for some. The stairs to them is narrow and steep but there is the lift. Also the bar upstairs was closed in the evenings, so if like us you wanted just to sit in the lounge on the odd night you had to go down to the basement to get a drink.

As we found at The Broadway Park Hotel on the I.O.W., the free bar brought the worst out in some people. why do they have to abuse it and make pigs of themselves? Thank goodness it was only one or two!

There doesn't seem to be a designated area outside for smoking, so smokers were stood on the main entrance steps. Not nice for them or non smokers having to negotiate each other all the time!

Exmouth itself is a real treat, just a few minutes walk from the Grand. A large pedestrian shopping area and a big square with coffee houses, it's a great place to wander around. the prom is a delight to walk along,,,just be aware of joggers and other keep fit nutters!

We went on the included excursion to Sidmouth and up the coast a bit. Well worth going on.

All in all Exmouth and the Grand are well worth visiting.....We will be going back as soon as we can....

Room Tip: No Question....Top floor or second if you prefer and get room 50, put the kettle on, pull up the two chairs to the big window and relax!!!
