we have been many hotels with shearings but this was by far the worst some rooms on our floor were being refurbished we had to walk on dust sheets and flakes of paint on carpet even the floor in the lift was covered in flakes of paint if we had been told about this when we booked we would have chosen another hotel

We are sorry to hear that your stay was not what you expected. When refurbishments are being undertaken in the hotel every effort is made to keep disruption to a minimum.
Kind regards

Just returned from a long week end break at this hotel. I went with my husband and mother in law because she likes to be catered for and entertained. The staff here are really very friendly, welcoming and work very hard. The hotel is very clean. They have started to update the hotel - a never ending task I suspect! The main front communal rooms have more modern furnishings and are light and airy with lovely views of the sea. Just need to sort out the old water stains in the ceiling plaster in these rooms and they would be fabulous. The corridor leading to our room (ground floor) was in need of some TLC but you don't stay in the corridor! Our room was good, immaculate in the cleaning and linen department. Everything worked and the bed was also very comfortable. The style of our room was more modern than I expected - a pleasant surprise. En suite was clean but a tad on the compact side! Would have liked a few more TV channels to choose from please. Food was good, always piping hot and waitress service was particularly good (gold star for Margaret, our waitress). Portions could have been slightly larger but this is a sign of the times almost everywhere! We enjoyed the entertainment but it was not helped by the fact that there weren't many people in the ballroom, so it was a bit of struggle to get the atmosphere going. We ere very pleasantly surprised as this was the first time we have stayed at this type of hotel but my mother in law has stayed in similar many times. Well done to all the staff who make you feel so welcome.

Thank you for your lovely comments. I have passed on your kind words to our staff, especially Margaret. The staff work hard to provide a happy and enjoyable stay. There are some refurbishments being undertaken of some of the corridors. If you come to see us again in the future you may see some changes.
Kind regards
Kenny, General Manager

Having read the review by 'Pat C 17th February 2012' I was almost put off from booking this hotel, I even phoned Shearings and asked if they had read this review or received any detrimental comments from this person. I was told that they had not. Having stayed in two Shearings hotels previously and been quite satisfied, I thought I would go ahead and chance it anyway. How glad I am that I did. No, it's not a first class top end of the market 5 star hotel, but what it does offer is good value for money. Our bedroom and bed linen was clean, yes the furniture is tired and could do with updating as certainly the lift could also. But when you look at what you are paying, for what you get, it is a real bargain. We stayed for 4 nights 19-23rd March 2012 on an 'all inclusive package' which meant that besides our half board in ensuite room we were entitled to 5 drinks per person per day and these could be alcoholic or soft drinks or tea and coffee - it cost us £159 per person for the break (4 nights). We stayed in rooms 36 and 37. Staff were friendly and helpful and nothing was too much trouble

Room Tip: Rooms away from the lift, see view if possible.

Thank you for your positive feedback. We do believe that it is good value for money, and we’re happy that you gave us a chance to realise this. Although refurbishment is an ongoing process, we do the best with what we have. Our staff here are very accommodating and try their best to assist in any way they can to ensure you enjoy your stay.
Kind regards

We had a 3 night self drive stay from Friday 9th March. As we are regular visiters to Bay hotels across the country we know what to expect from their hotels. Like most Bay hotels the Grand could do with a little TLC but the rooms are always very clean and tidy and the towels are changed every day, the house keeping staff work very hard. The restaurant is very pleasant, the food is very good and the waiting staff are very polite and hard working, you don't have to wait long to be served. From the time we booked into the hotel to the time we left every, member of staff should be commended for their hard work, politeness, and smartness.
Overall, don't expect 4 star accommadation but for how much you pay the hotel has everything you want and is good value for money.

We have taken many self drive breaks with Shearing’s covering most of the south west hotels . Staff are always friendly. The restaurants have a nice atmosphere and even if the hotels are slightly dated and could do with some tender love and care ( Just like most of the guests who may be older than the average holidaymaker we find them really young at heart.) Hope to have many more enjoyable times with Shearing’s . ………..and great value for money

Just returned from The Grand Hotel after a weekend break booked through National Holidays. Had a lovely time. The staff worked their socks off and were very pleasant....especially the waiting/housekeeping staff. Ok, so the hotel is a little dated around the edges.......a bit of TLC thrown at it would work wonders (a lick of paint and new carpets)......but overall, the bedding and towels were fresh and clean and the food was hot and edable. If we were to go back again to Exmouth we wouldn't hesitate to stay at this hotel, the only difference, we would try secure a 'sea view' room....the views are wonderful.
I must also say, our National coach driver Wilf was a pleasure to travel with.

Spent 3 nights at the hotel from friday 24th and was pleasently surprised. The bedroom was clean and tidy sheets and towles clean and fluffy I dont go away to sit in a bedroom so it served its purpose. I found the food to be very good hot and well served by a polite and smileing young waitress. as we only booked a week before they must have known they were changing there all inc to a 4 drinks a day format so i dont no why they did'nt tell me at time of booking . We go self drive but it seems people who came by coach paid £20 00 less than me.I will go back as i find these hotels good value for money.
