Description: The River Exe Cafe is a floating barge just off the Ski lane on the River Exe, and is in the heart of Exmouth’s water sports fraternity, wakeboarding, waterskiing, kayaking, sailing to name just a few, however it is also situated in an area of outstanding natural beauty, protected by Natural England. Open from April to September only . The Exe Estuary is home to many rare birds and creatures including Avocets, Osprey and of course our friendly grey seal. With the potential to take up to 100 people on board the Cafe has been designed very much like the “Ski in Ski out” wooden chalets found on the ski slopes of many ski resorts, but with the intention that the quality of food and service exceeds all expectations of the external look and feel. The barge has a licensed bar and covered outdoor space with heaters and indoor seating to relax well into the evening without suffering the cold. Customers to the barge really are of all ages and walks of life, ranging from the usual river users and water sports enthusiasts to bird watchers, artists and holiday makers. Special events such as birthday parties, anniversaries, stag & hen parties to corporate & team building days can be arranged. Private and exclusive use of the barge is also available.

An experience not to be missed, we visited as a family group (mixed generation from 9-74) and all returned home happy and with full tums! All preferences and appetites were catered for; food exceptional, wine good, a warm welcome and service with a smile!
The river taxi entertaining in itself (have some warm clothes ready), and the experience of "après ski" on water was unusual but not to be frowned at, plenty of lovely views from the taxi and restaurant. We visited during the bank holiday weekend, we normally avoid anything touristy at peak times, we are happy to say it didn't feel like a BH.
Would definitely visit again, book early for indoor seating.

Went a couple of weeks ago for dinner and, although the weather wasn't perfect, inside was warm, cosy and apart from the stunning views you'd never know you were on a boat. The staff were attentive and friendly, and the food was some of the best I've eaten in the UK.
The meal was surprisingly affordable, and there was a good selection of drinks for every taste.
The water taxi are putting a cover on the boat that they will be using in the evenings so that choppy water/rain won't get you wet for those predictable summer evenings.
It is perfect for any occasion, lunch on a sunny day (or a rainy one), a special celebration dinner, or just a holiday treat.

We were staying in Exmouth with some friends for the weekend and wanted to try the Exe River Cafe on Holly's recommendation. Holly, our daughter lives in Exeter and has been a couple of times. I phoned Richard and on his advice we booked Saturday lunchtime rather than Friday evening, he said the evenings can be a bit nippy. We had a glorious sunny day on the Saturday and the whole experience was amazing - the river taxi over and the Cafe itself with its friendly staff and lovely food is not to be missed. The menu was exciting and I think the fresh fish and chips is the top choice. Richard made us feel very welcome and made sure we were well looked after. I can't wait to go back for more.

My girlfriend and I came down to Devon to get away from London for the week. Having heard about this restaurant, I was keen to go. At first it seemed like a bit of a hassle getting the boat, but as soon as we got the water taxi from Exmouth Docks, it set the tone for our afternoon.

In short, the situation is perfect. The middle of the estuary is fun, beautiful and peaceful. The food was outstanding, better than any London gastropub but without the inflated prices or pretentiousness. It's all absolutely local, fresh and skilfully cooked.

It's the perfect place to wile away the afternoon - though next time we'll make an evening out of it as a destination to unite friends for an evening one weekend. We sat outside at first, though a bit chilly, but the staff gave us blankets which was well thought out and practical. We went inside when the wind picked up but were totally insulated from in once we did. Actually, it would be a fantastic place to spend a few hours (or day) with a book if the weather was terrible...

This place was brilliant. Genuinely very high quality food, perfect situation and superb staff - the manager was cracking value. It's not the usual place to eat, but that's what makes it great.
