Description: The River Exe Cafe is a floating barge just off the Ski lane on the River Exe, and is in the heart of Exmouth’s water sports fraternity, wakeboarding, waterskiing, kayaking, sailing to name just a few, however it is also situated in an area of outstanding natural beauty, protected by Natural England. Open from April to September only . The Exe Estuary is home to many rare birds and creatures including Avocets, Osprey and of course our friendly grey seal. With the potential to take up to 100 people on board the Cafe has been designed very much like the “Ski in Ski out” wooden chalets found on the ski slopes of many ski resorts, but with the intention that the quality of food and service exceeds all expectations of the external look and feel. The barge has a licensed bar and covered outdoor space with heaters and indoor seating to relax well into the evening without suffering the cold. Customers to the barge really are of all ages and walks of life, ranging from the usual river users and water sports enthusiasts to bird watchers, artists and holiday makers. Special events such as birthday parties, anniversaries, stag & hen parties to corporate & team building days can be arranged. Private and exclusive use of the barge is also available.

From the water taxi out and back ( with a view of a seal pup as well ) The whole River Exe Cafe experience is certainly different, and pleasantly so. Food was great if a bit pricey and the service the same. Love the slightly informal atmosphere and decor. We sat inside as it was a bit breezy but had the opportunity to watch the chiefs at work. Please do try the local wine from Pebblebed vineyard in Topsham. We had the rose which went very well with our John Dory and Sea Bream main courses. The wife thought her portion of John Dory was a bit small but delicious.
Make sure you understand about the return times for your taxi. We weren't ready for ours as it was not made clear to us. Would we go back ? Yes most definitely .

What an amazing place, situated on the river exe with splendid views. A very special & unique experience. We both had the most delicious monkfish curry, perfectly cooked with great attention to detail. The service was very friendly & pleasantly informal. I cannot recommend this wonderful restaurant enough.

This venue trades on it's unique location. The water taxi ride was nice (£5 return) and took about 15 minutes each way, the skipper was pleasant and helpful. A warm greeting on arrival but the food was disappointing and expensive for what it was. The calamari starter was spoilt by very thick and stodgy batter and didn't taste as though it had been seasoned. The razor clam was a pitifully small portion for £8.50p.
When the mains arrived we had to arrange our own cutlery. The rest of the meal proved equally uninspiring.

We traveled out to the cafe on the water taxi to celebrate a 60th Birthday. When we arrived we were greeted and shown to our table (for 6). We were not happy with the location of the table (we wanted a nice view of the river) so we asked if we could move and the staff were more than happy to accommodate us.

We ordered a mixture of fish dishes that were on the days menu. All of the fish/food was cooked fresh to order and tasted very very nice. I had a whole fresh crab which was the best crab I have ever tasted. The cafe had a nice selection of drinks (local ales & lovely wines) and the service provided was very friendly.

We would all recommend a visit to the cafe for a 'different' view of the river whilst eating great food.

A truly delightful and memorable experience.

The lovely Nicky, Front of House, made us feel valued and special guests the moment we stepped off the water taxi from Exmouth. Delicious hot cheesy garlic bread and olives with a good ale and nice cold white to whet the appetite out on the deck under coloured bunting you cna watch all the varied boating activities happening all around. We choose to go under cover for our meal as the wind picked up where we had a fantastic shared seafood platter. The guys in the kitchen here certainly know how to do seafood. Atmosphere is welcoming and chill. We whiled away a couple of hours here celebrating our Silver Wedding Anniversary and are now trying to think of another reason to treat ourselves and return.
Well done guys.
