“Cosy but old hotel”
Reviewed 30 May 2013 via mobile

Stayed here for three nights. The hotel is old and has much atmosphere, but is a bit old. This of coure adds to the atmosphere in many ways, but the squeaky floors were a bit annoying in the end. Room was nice and clean, but not really modern. The staff was very nice and helpful. Location is great, short way from the railway station and with a beautiful view.

Like other reviewers, I stayed at the Royal Beacon whilst attending a family party near Exeter. The 90yo birthday girl had been to parties in the hotel in the 1940s. There was a warm welcome (even though the sea facing room did have draughty windows, the weather was exceptionally ghastly) and staff could not have been more helpful and kind. The free wifi was an unexpected bonus, I had wondered why the bar was always busy with seemingly non residents, now I realise.

The 3 rooms were clean and well equipped, but bathroom lighting poor. We ate in the basement restaurant both nights, the food was good and served with humour and care. I had been anxious about the parking, but the road really did have spaces even at busy times.

Yes Mr Adminstrator, put some money into this, its a great hotel and could be magnificent.

We stayed for the first time last weekend, the bank holiday, to attend my sisters 25th w/a party on a river boat cruise. The hotel is a short walk to the jetty.

Gorgeous views from our window at the front. The staff we met were brilliant - very professional.

There is a car park and free parking on the road outside but on the Saturday (the best weather day) we went out and couldn't find a space on the return. We drove down to the beach car park (about 10 mins walk back), stuck £2 in the machine and left the car for 2 hours until the beach cleared, retrieved the car and parked it just a few metres from the hotel. Nothing to do with the hotel but just a heads up for anyone who stays. Don't go round and round looking for a space, it's a waste of petrol!

Saturday night dinner was delicious, very good portions and a very reasonable price. Sunday breakfast (incl. in price) same again. Check in and out was very quick.

As a last note: Our room was very good, well presented, no signs of needing refurbishing whatsoever and our relatives and friends who also stayed didn't report anything either.

Room Tip: book a Sea view room.

We stayed at the Royal Beacon Hotel in Exmouth over this week-end. The rooms were very clean, and the staff very friendly and helpful. The Dining staff at breakfast were very good There was 17 of us for Sunday lunch and the food was excellent, with a great choice of menu. The bar staff were also very helpful. Part of the hotel, i.e. the Lounge could do with upgrading, but I think they have started doing this I would go back again.

Room Tip: It is only a 5 minute walk to the beach

we travelled from dorset in terrible weather...arrived early but was greeted with such warmth from the young lady in reception who fetched us tea and coffee in the lounge as we were far too early for our room to be ready...we went into town for our lunch and returned to a room of such luxury and views of the beach...a short walk opposite the hotel and down the garden path led us to the pavilion for our showaddywaddy show...breakfast was excellent...although we like to experience different places for our evening meal we decided to eat in the hotel restaurant on one evening which was really good...we had a night cap in the bar each evening...we admit that this hotel is out of our normal price range but we booked because it had a special cheaper discount. As we are older and find being out and about all day too much now it was great to sit in the room and relax quite a bit with such an brilliant view from our window...we will definately save our pennies and look out for another special offer!!

Room Tip: a must is a sea view room

We stayed in room 112 for 3 nights on a B & B basis. Great view and spacious room. Good food, well stocked bar and friendly staff. Car park is a tad small but plenty of free parking in the local roads. Good strength wifi - free of course! Paper delivered to room nice and early. 5 minute walk from the beach - town very accessible. We will return.

We had not stayed in Exmouth before, and chose the Royal Beacon Hotel on the basis of location and view. We were not disappointed, the view from our room was just great. The hotel has been in administration for some time, and I think maintenance is suffering as a result, but we were very impressed by the staff, from the top to the lowest level. Morale is high, nothing is too much trouble, and the whole team is clearly committed to keeping the Hotel going. Well done to everyone. The restaurant is operating to a very high standard, with imaginative menus and first class service. The food was so good that, very unusually for us, we stayed five nights and ate in the hotel four times in the evenings. One of these was a bar meal, and the bar offerings are extensive and good value – it’s a great, friendly bar. A final word, please administrators release some funds for essential maintenance, the management team and this hotel have a great future given a bit of support.

Room Tip: A sea view is essential
