“A perfect lunch. Perfect.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 22 May 2014 via mobile

The Railway Carriage Café is situated right on the Exmouth beachfront (away from town centre end) and it really is the ideal place for a quick lunch. I went there yesterday and again today.

The café is housed within an old GWR railway carriage, there are approximately 12 tables with seating for 2-6 people. The carriage is unexpectedly spacious, and has a nice interior with the little kitchen situated in back of tha carriage. There is an outdoors seating area on site too.

There are two separate unisex toilets outside, which are kept clean. A model railway which they seem very proud of though I didn't visit this so cannot comment.

The café is table service, the service we received was fantastic, a very friendly couple served us on both visits. They went out of their way to make it a special visit and nothing was too much trouble, I requested chips rather than salad for sides - not a problem I heard other tables requestinf slight menu variations and nothing was too much trouble.

The menu itself was a typical café menu, though the vast spread they offered was suprising from the size of the kitchen. They have a selection of Paninis, sandwiches, jackets as well as mains, such as pies, full english, and your usual café grub, there is a kids menu. The food quality was good, very tasty. It isn't michelin star food, but perfect cafe food.

Price is extremely good value for money a lunch is about £6-7 per head including drinks.

An absolutely fantastic job guys!

“BRILLIANT!!!! :-)”

Visited this cafe after a lovely weekend at Devon cliffs, the friendly staff made us feel very welcome and couldn't do enough for us including my 21 month old daughter! Lovely cooked breakfast and tea, Great atmosphere and what better than eating it on a train! Can't wait to return!

“Travel back in time”

What a nice surprise to find on the seafront. Firstly I must say how nice all the staff are, very friendly and quick service.
You can tell the food is fresh, but you are not kept waiting a long time for your meal. I could have stayed there all afternoon relaxing in the warmth of the carriage whilst the rain was running down the window. I couldn't believe the size of the menu, having worked in a cafe a few years ago I was amazed at the range and value of the meals considering the size the kitchen must be.
Whilst here the model railway is also worth a visit.

“Disaster!”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 19 April 2014

Visited on Good Friday - usual prompt and excellent service was missing - took an age for meals to arrive and they came before drinks! Not only customers this happened to some customers left, tired of waiting,at least not charged for drinks. Usual, charming young manager on day off, if this is what happens better to close when absent!

“What's happened?”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 18 April 2014

Been to the café on many occasions and always had good service and a nice snack. Not sure what was happening today.
Four of us went for a late breakfast - by the time the last person's food arrived, the first had gone cold - it took that long for a bacon bap!. Then when I went to pay, I joined a queue and I wasn't the only one querying a bill - not sure why I was expected to pay for 4 coffees when we'd had 2 but I was totally fed up by now and just wanted to get out - not sure I can face another experience like that.
As we were leaving, there were several more bacon baps heading back to the kitchen - the customers had long given up too!
