“Exactly what you can expect for the price, great golf, somewhat old and dated facilities..”
Reviewed 16 May 2014 via mobile

Exactly what you can expect for the price, great golf, somewhat old and dated facilities, but for the price you simply cannot complain. Went as a group of 14, to play golf, found the rooms to be somewhat cramped and dated, however for the amount of time you actually spend in them, they are perfectly adequate. The complex is much larger than I imagined, and there were plenty of things to do if you could find the time between rounds. The food was like the rooms, perfectly adequate, not 5* dinning! but if you expected that then perhaps you should be looking elsewhere! However, if you want reasonable selection of food, a great self service breakfast and lunch, with waitress service for dinner, then this is the place for you. I have seen others comment on the staff being unfriendly, and I can understand that on the odd occasion the staff may not be the friendliest, but I think that's because a lot of them seem to be fairly new, and probably need to be knocked into shape a little with some attention from senior staff....now for the golf, a vast complex containing several courses, of varying degrees of difficulty, length and test. All of them that I played were in fabulous condition, especially given the amount of footfall (buggy-fall?) they receive. I didn't appreciate the buggy path setup that can mean lengthy walks to and fro for clubs between the buggy and your ball, so make sure to factor that into your aim! Hats off to the green staff, they do a tremendous job.

So overall, for the price this place is fantastic, and I look forward to returning next year.....my only bugbear for the facilities is that the driving range is almost worthless as it has been shortened to a netted area so nothing other than some swing practise is possible....given golf is a large feature, it could really do with having a proper driving range along with a practise are for your short game, and I also found the course bunkers were unplayable, as they were too compacted with a type of sand I have not come across on a course

This was our second visit to the Manor House/Ashbury. A group of 10 of us stayed for 3 nights and had a great time. It's not luxurious but is excellent value. Rooms and public areas are clean and provide everything required. Decor is circa early 1980s - but goodness knows how much it would cost to remove all that Artex!! Plenty of food and choice of menu at every mealtime - we all enjoyed everything we had. The best thing about these 2 hotels is the huge variety of activities on offer - all included in the price. Something for everyone. Our group consisted of one v.keen golfer and 9 willing to try most of the other sports or crafts.. The weather was dire but we found plenty to keep us occupied indoors. It wasn't too busy, so we were able to do fit in all the activities we chose - massages, pedicures, jacuzzi, archery, bowls, tenpin bowling, snooker, shooting, badminton, quizzes, enamelling.......fantastic value and we will be back! Only one tiny criticism - treatment areas could be nicer, to better enhance the experience. Oh - and be prepared to get plenty of exercise just getting from one place to another - it's a warren with lots of stairs!

Ive visited Ashbury annually for the last 3 years and am really impressed every time I visit. Our group has grown each year from 9 to 15 most recently and everybody in our group raves about the place. The courses are superb, the food is decent and varied. The rooms do a more than suitable job for a bunch of golfers on a break. The cherry on the cake this year ... One of our golfers dropped out last minute. I didnt think to even ask for a refund as it was such short notice there would be little chance the hotel could resell the spot. (the rooms and tee times were taken by my group anyhow).. A refund dropped into my bank account today. The hotel had recognised we were one short on our numbers and processed the refund with no prompting or chasing. Incredible customer service from an incredible facility. Cannot wait to return next year.

Had 2 nights stay for the bank holiday weekend with my family, the recection is a dinjy hole in the middle of the hotel with no greeting or signs to show you the way. the food is re-heated and made into pies for the next day, and the hole place was a dark and dirty shade of brown. The family bedroom to sleep 3 is very small. The games rooms look like something leftover from the 70's and the corridoor to these rooms were very small. never going back again.

Dear n0g00d,

I was sorry to read that our hotel did not meet you expectations. We are often praised on the quality of our food, especially on the variety of the lunch menu. We also often receive positive feedback that, although the décor of the hotel is not to everyone’s taste, it is clean, tidy and well maintained.

We are currently upgrading the games room. We have recently fitted new x box stations and we have just ordered a brand new air hockey machine.
We certainly hope you may reconsider returning, if not we wish you all the best with alternative venues.

With kind regards
Simon Brothers.

This was my 5th consecutive visit to Ashbury manor at Easter, unfortunately few issues are starting to rise. staff, although never the happiest bunch around were less smiley and certainly less knowledgeable, reception were on the edge of being rude, bar staff were like robots and some of the waiters at dinner service had a very low knowledge of English and the process of serving it.On Easter it sunday it rained heavily and for some strange reason the drying room next to the main building was turned off, particularly annoying when it was like a sauna in there for the previous 2 days so all golfers annoyed when picked up wet equipment Monday morning !!.
Golf shop staff were great as always, food was excellent and varied and the Golf course's once again played very well and were very well maintaned especially for the level of use they have.

I always reccomend Ashbury to my friends and will continue to do so, but, its not just about number of amenities you can put on, interacation with your customers should be a higher priority than it feels like.

Room Tip: Easier acces to pool if your in Moorview building

Dear Mininigel,
Thank you for your feedback in regard to your stay with us in April this year. I am sorry that you found some of the staff’s attitude unfriendly. This is something we are working on day by day as customer service quality is an area that we feel is very important. Staff training and helping some of our newer staff improve their English is ongoing and I am sure will improve measurably in the very near future.

We did experience a boiler fault on the Sunday but this was fixed first thing on Tuesday. I apologise for the inconvenience caused.

Thank you for the kind praise of the shop staff, the catering and the quality of the Golf Courses.
If you would be so kind to contact me directly in regard to your note on Moorview access I could then see where you felt improvement could be made and thus see if some remedial action could be made.

Thank you for your continuing recommendation and your repeat business.

With kind regards
Simon Brothers

Excellent value for money. Probably the most unique holiday in Britain and certainly the best value for money. Rooms basic but comfortable. All inclusive sports and leisure facilities wonderful, pool particularly good with two saunas and jacuzzis. Plenty to do for all ages, and free use of the art and craft sister hotel 3 miles away. Excellent value for money with all inclusive food available pretty much all day long. Decent driving range and well stocked pro shop. Staff friendly and full of good advice. The golf courses offer challenges for all handicaps and are set in beautiful surroundings some with lovely views of Dartmoor. For a stunning round play Kigbeare and enjoy the unique 3rd and 16th. Probably two of the best holes in golf. Plenty of buggies available, the best way to pack all the rounds in. The new Spa facility opened after our last visit but looks incredible.

Room Tip: Rooms away from the proshop are better if you like a lie in as golfers go out early and get their bu...

Dear Heidi M,

Thank you for taking the time to post such a nice and complimentary review. I was very glad to read that you enjoyed all the facilities and food. I was particularly pleased in your comments on the staff and your high praise of the golf courses. The New Hydro Spas are open and running at both Hotels now and we are receiving wonderful feedback from guests (especially golfers having a relax after a day on the courses).
Hope to see you back again soon.

This is our 2nd visit. This year 9 golfer s - some regular, one less so but all reasonable standard. To be honest for value you just can't beat here. We were also lucky with some great weather too.

3 course lunch on arrival.
Golf and free buggy.
4 course dinner and bottle of wine between 2.
Bed and breakfast.
Golf and free buggy.
3 course lunch.
£64.95 - including use of all facilities.

This year we played Pines and Oakwood - both good courses.

Tip - My favourites though are Kigbeare and Pines.

100% recommended.

Room Tip: Ask if you are in a group Nd you need together.
