I find it hard to understand why the restaurant at the Commodore has not got a higher ranking in Instow. We have a lunchtime meal there on average once a month. Whether you eat in the bar or in the restaurant, the service and food is always excellent. The bar menu is varied and reasonably priced. The set meal on Sunday in the restaurant (booking essential) has reasonable choice and beautifully presented food. They have recently added a vegetarian set menu which massively improves the experience. The view across the estuary from the restaurant is stunning and with the palm trees in the grounds you could be forgiven for thinking you were on the Riviera.

Menu is limited, but what is presented is very good quality. A bit pricey but the sunset view is brilliant!

Food at the Commodore is always first class. You can either choose to dine, silver service, in the restaurant which looks out to wonderful views where the Torridge and Taw rivers meet the open sea; at sunset, the panorama is quite spectacular, or you can choose to eat in the less formal surroundings of the bar. Unfortunately, much of the bar does not allow you to enjoy the wonderful view but there is a lounge with sea views, although we often find this closed for a 'private function'. However, in the Summer, you can sit and eat outside on the terrace and watch the world go by, whilst children and families can be seen playing on Instow beach.

If you wish to eat in the restaurant, I would recommend you book as it can become busy, particularly as this is also a hotel with staying guests eating in the restaurant. This hotel attracts the more elderly clientele who use the bar as their regular, so it would be advisable to book ahead, particularly if you are booking for a large group or family gathering.

My wife and I had drinks in the bar, followed by a meal in the restaurant. The meal was excellent and the view was outstanding, as we watched the sun go down over the bay. We did not stay at the hotel.
