“New Years Eve FUN!”
Reviewed 7 January 2014

My husband and I had a wonderful experience at the Commodore on New Years Eve, we were welcomed with a cocktails and canapes of Goats cheesecake with red onion Jam and Crab and Salmon Canneloni (lovely). Starter of Cured Duck Breaast, Carrot 3 ways, Caramelised Turnip, Truffle Honey Dressing. Fish course of Haddock, brown shrimps, celeriac and hazelnuts with roast chicken jus. Main course fillet of beef, Brisket croquet (really tasty), Salt baked roots, onion puree and beef bacon, thym jus.
Desert was apples and custard as you have never seen... followed by coffee and petit fours (unfortunately by then I was so full we could only manage a little bit of each of the pistachios and white choc florentines and cranberry marshmallows.... - though I did obviously have to try)... The entertainment was great and all the interaction from the guests ... (you had to be there) was fab and funny with the bag of party poppers/balloons etc provided by the hotel - plenty of fun ... and such a friendly family atmosphere, with people we had never met, so many laughs and we were lucky to win a bottle of champagne in the raffle which we enjoyed during the fireworks. We enjoyed the singing, the dancing, the disco, the piper, the whole group auld lang syne and the fireworks.. Thank you Gary, James and all the team. A special thanks to the Chef's Greg, Dan, Simon and Liam. Excellent job! We hope to come back soon.

My Brother and I have just treated my Mother to an 80th Birthday weekend stay at the Commodore. We have not stayed there for forty years, it is still run by the same family and is still an excellent hotel. We were met at the door my the owner's Son, James, who welcomed us into the hotel just the same as his Grandfather always used to back in the early seventies. That was the start of a very warm and friendly stay, we could not fault it. The service was excellent, all the staff were friendly, helpful and had that old style you just don't seem to find these days in hotels etc. The menu was good and the food even better. The rooms were clean, tidy and the hotel in general was very well maintained. Set just back from the beach with stunning views from the rooms of the estuary, the hotel is as suggested is a little gem. Instow is very unspoilt, the resort and the hotel is very much unchanged since the 70's, mainly due to the family's unfaltering professionalism towards service and the local council and the local 'caretakers' ( Christie family ) long sighted views towards keeping the local area looking very much as it always has for many years. My Mother could not have wished for a better present, and just as we were loading the car for our journey home, the owner asked us to come and join his mother in the lounge for a coffee and a catch up with her after many years of not seeing her. A beautiful experience made so by the Woolaway family. Thank you.
Paul, Mike and Rachel Jenkins.

Whilst traveling home to wales from Cornwall my friend and i decided to have a look at north Devon. Quite by chance we stumbled upon this hotel. The room rate was extremely reasonable and the the premesis spottlesly clean and well run. We dined there and the food was superb with professional service and friendly attentive waiting staff. My friend and I were especially impressed by how the staff struck the right balance of professionalism and friendlyness. We were both made to feel welcome and valued cutomers. I also enjoyed meeting Fudge, an itinerent cat that pops up to the hotel of an evening and is a delight to meet. I will certainly stay here again and am delighted to have found it.

Lovely walk on Instow beach and my wife I decided to live it up a bit and go to the Commodore Hotel for a posh afternoon tea. They have a nice area reserved for serving teas to non residents
The waitress was chatting to a couple and did not acknowledge us when we entered.
I went to the washroom and my wife sat down and waited.
Not once did the waitress acknowledge her, I returned and the waitress left the room. We were not even offered a menu. We will not to return. Shame as it looks a lovely place

9 of us had a 2 night stay at the Commodore. We were celebrating a 90th birthday and our party included 2 over 90 and a further member of our party was in a wheelchair. Not the easiest of groups to look after. The staff at the Commodore were excellent. The hotel is perfectly set up to look after people with mobility issues and seemed to anticipate all our requirements. Its location neat to the front at Instow made it easy for the elderly and infirm to get out into the fresh air without a major performance.
The food at both dinner and breakfast was excellent - fresh and well presented and service was at all times accommodating and prompt. Well done - we were not the easiest of groups.

Room Tip: Ground floor overlooking the estuary are excellent
