Hugh the tour guide was excellent and we would definitely recommend this guided tour.
It's a little walk to the lighthouse but well worth it.

Lovely walk, well worth a visit on a clear day just for the fresh air and Devon views. Well worth a half day walk.

Thank Nicola B

Great place to go even if you are not an old salt. Stand there and appreciate what it was like to have to be truly self sufficient in earlier times. Former lighthouse keepers kept a small farm there.
On a sparkling day, great spot to drink in the scenery, on a not such a good day atmospheric.
On a howling hooley day, watch the tidal rips fight each other, especially with wind across the tide. get the salt in your hair if it is really ripping a gale.Usually someone there to explain all the technicalities.

You must check the opening times before you vist to avoid disappointment - it is not always open.
During the summer months you pay to park in a private car park at Start Point (it is free out of season but the lighthouse may be closed) then walk down a tarmac path to the lighthouse. It is a bit steep so allow time for the uphill return trip. The lighthouse has a very interesting history and the views are excellent from the top.
To make the trip even better then on the way back up the hill you will see a footpath up on the left (signposted as the coastal path) which you follow round the cliffs and eventually arrive at a very nice beach which you can get down to. When you have had enough you then walk up the valley away from the beach which takes you directly back to the car park.
This circular walk is lovely to do at any time of year regardless of the lighthouse and if you catch the tides right you will see seals opn the rocks about half way round the cliff walk. the are smaller beaches and rock pools along the walk.

This really is a lovely part of Devon. Even in the middle of november the views over Start Bay are stunning. The information boards are very useful. A really great day out
