“Lovely house set in plenty of space”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 13 May 2014

Had a lovely stay there over Easter. There's a lot of space in the gardens for the children to run about, the house was clean and tidy. Of particular note was a large open plan kitchen which suited our large party. Would recommend it.

Big family meeting to celebrate a 70th birthday. We occupied both The Laurels (which has an extravagant kitchen) and The Coach House and were made to feel very welcome by Barbara and Ed. Very clean, comfortable accommodation with large grounds, a joy for the children to run around in. We would highly recommend this venue for anybody wanting a family holiday, but if you are good walkers you might find it especially attractive as there is a beautiful footpath leading to the South Devon Coast Path about 2 miles away - no need to use the car. From the South Devon Coast Path you have easy access to Lannacombe, Woodcombe Sands and other beaches between Start Point and Prawle Point.

We have just had the most brilliant 70th birthday celebration for my mother at South Allington house. We were a large family gathering and they made everything so easy for us to organise, nothing was too much trouble, even giving us the size of the ovens in the self catering houses so we could plan what dishes to bring the dinners in!!

Room Tip: All rooms are well appointed and comfortable. I phoned up South Allington House when I was planning...

A large house with several types of visitors. The brochure does not highlight that camping is also available so what is expected to be a quite location is in fact very busy in peak season with numerous cars, campers walking across the 'separate gardens' of those paying high prices for self catering accommodation as well as visitors for cream teas. Public toilets for visitors are right next to the self catering accommodation which is not ideal. The house is tired and some rooms damp even in summer so not sure what other seasons would be like. The space we had was not really sufficient for the maximum numbers quoted. Internet is not available in the accommodation only in the garden and mobile reception very poor. We were disappointed for the price paid and thought the staff a little unfriendly and slow to help. Not recommended.

Room Tip: Try camping

Dear Llew6019

Thank you for your review, although we are obviously disappointed in your comments. We would like to take a minute to address your points below, and hopefully assure you that we are always working on how we could improve.

We have introduced signs that will respect the garden areas of the self-catering accommodation.

We have changed the visitors' toilet location, and cream tea visitors now use a separate toilet away from the self-catering accommodation.

The house has undergone renovations during the winter to solve any damp issues that occur with old buildings.

We're sorry you feel that the space you had was not sufficient for the maximum numbers quoted - we have furnished the accommodation with adequate seats for people staying (both in the lounge and dining room), and all rooms are spacious.

We did not advertise internet connection when you stayed, as the coverage was not available - however, it has been upgraded and is now available in two self-caterings.

Regarding the staff, we are a friendly bunch, and we take direction from our visitors - we want to give you a warm welcome but don't want to impose ourselves on your stay. We aim to please! Due to the nature of our business, we do have to employ seasonal staff, but we do our best to instill our standards on everyone who works for us.

We're sorry that you were disappointed with your stay, and we have taken steps to improve the facilities, based on your comments.

Fantastic location about a mile from Lannacombe Cove. Lovely old country house and grounds.
Very friendly, helpful owners. Room 2, where we stayed was very large, comfortable bed, great view. Total peace at night.
Cooked breakfast was very good, with option for cereal and fruit.
Highly recommended.

Room Tip: Room 2 was excellent.

After following signs for cream teas, we were welcomed by an imposing house and lovely grounds. Hopeful, we went inside to order cream teas which is where the disappointment began. There were no signs to where we ordered. We saw what looked like a kitchen and had to knock the door and walk through to a dingy kitchen - where a young lady was folding washing on the surfaces. Once finally ordered we went to sit in the lovely gardens and were greeted by a swarm of wasps and warned by other guests it was to get worse and were advised to sit inside. We walked through an old smelly sitting room to a drab breakfast room where we sat. The cream teas were served on a tray, with plates and cups piled up for us to serve ourselves. The 'clotted' cream was more like pouring cream and the tea was weak. Scones were ok, if a little small. Think the place needs a lot of TLC and something to draw the customers in. Real shame.

Dear PjameS1993

Thank you for your review, although we are obviously disappointed in your comments. We would like to take a minute to address your points below, and hopefully assure you that we are always working on how we could improve.

Regarding the lack of signs, most visitors arrive and ring the bell (that is signed) on our large front door, or, alternatively, enter the front door and make their way to the kitchen.

That kitchen is our private family kitchen, and is a large farmhouse kitchen that is of the utmost cleanliness, and where we undertake the vast majority of the work for our business.

As for the sitting room, it is an 'old room' (being in a Grade II listed building) but it is not 'smelly' - we pride ourselves on our cleanliness and hygiene standards. The 'drab' breakfast room is in fact our popular dining room, which is bright and airy, with very large windows and period antique furniture.

The clotted cream we use is Langage Farm clotted cream, which can possibly vary a little in consistency, but never fails to deliver on taste. Our jam is homemade and plentiful and we have received many compliments. If you found your tea too weak for your taste, if you had mentioned it at the time, we would have happily rectified the issue for you.

Sadly, wasps are a part of the British summer, and, although we always put many wasp catchers out in our grounds, it is impossible to avoid them altogether.

The house has undergone renovations during the winter to keep it up-to-date and, due to the size of the place, there is a constant rolling schedule of work undertaken.

My partner and I were driving along a country lane when we saw a sign that said "Cream Teas", so we continued down the lane past fields, stone fences, cows, and sheep and came upon South Allington House.....what a beautiful relaxing place....the sun was out and people were having tea on the lawn.....we ordered tea and scones .....and it was just delicious with plenty of clotted cream and homemade jam.....From the outside the house looks like something out of a Jane Austen novel. The owner and his daughter were quite friendly and after our tea, we stood in the kitchen discussing his lovely house.....the original oven in the kitchen is quite ancient and the house itself is charming.......just one of the many suprises that Devon offers when you wander down a country lane.
