“Excellent wedding at Burton Farmhouse”
Reviewed 24 September 2011

We enjoyed a wonderful wedding at Burton Farmhouse during August 2011. The owner of Burton Farmhouse was very helpful at answering all our questions in planning the wedding and tailoring the day to our needs. Burton Farmhouse is situated in a beautiful part of Devon and the Farmhouse and its surroundings offer an intimate location for a wedding. All staff on the day were very helpful and our guests and ourselves enjoyed a beautiful day.

on arrival we were shown to our tiny bedroom, so small and cluttered with old fashioned trinkets. we were not welcomed or offered any refreshments, despite having travelled a long way. no one took the time to show us around. we felt like we were intruding in a private home and were not made welcome at all. ensuite bathroom really small and claustrophobic. over priced in the extreme and how they have a 4 star rating is beyond me.

we booked before checking our trip advisor, big mistake. would not recommend it or stay anywhere like it again. completely spoiled our holiday.

Our room was full of 80's chintz.Old sheepskin rugs on the floor are just nasty!! The bedding was itchy nylon. It was stonkingly hot although no heaters were on and outside was perishingly cold. And only two little windows would open.We ended up keeping the bedroom door propped open.Out 'view' was of a permanent marque and nothing else. And bloomin pot-pourri everywhere!
The whole place was cluttered with chintz and it stank of fags and toilets as we entered. It was disorganised and muddled.Outside was a concrete jumble.not a typical farm.(and I should know!)
And the food? I'm afraid the "mr pikes" (or whoever it was) bacon and sausages and the"AGA cooked tomatoes" doesn't make it taste any better.I'm 100% Devonian and it doesn't wash. The food wasn't terrible.I didn't eat much (which says alot in it's self). The scones were doughy, the coleslaw and apple sauce were pure disasters, the stuffing balls were inedible as burnt, and the coffee week as water.Honestly ,The premier inn is way better. Also,No veggi or gluten-free options in sight.
Our room cost £160.That is WAY TOO MUCH.(unless of course your on a mission to be transported back to the 80's.....)

Stayed for a week's family holiday. Breakfasts were always good and the staff were friendly and very helpful. We made the mistake of having dinner on the first night and were disappointed with the standard of food which came with vast quantities of different kinds of vegetables some of which were overcooked or tasteless. Dinner was certainly overpriced for what we got. The cream teas were good and came with generous helpings of clotted cream and jam.
Good location and very near to Hope Cove, a lovely beach with a pub and small restaurant close at hand. The Hope & Anchor provided excellent dinners as did the Harbour Lights restaurant.
We stayed in 2 rooms Peach and Primrose (the honeymoon roomwith a four poster bed). The rooms were rather small as was the en-suite in Peach and the furnishings are 70's style. The bed in Primrose was however comfortable.
Hot water is rationed to narrow times, once in the morning and once in the evening and on at least 3 occasions we found none available when we needed it, very irritating considering the price we paid.
I would only rate this as a 3 star guesthouse and am suprised that the AA rated it as 4 star.

Room Tip: Ask what size the room is before you book.

We spent a lot staying at Burton Farmhouse. My Dad and Brother stayed for 5 nights in the B&B, and my husband, toddler and I stayed in the 'Shepards Rest' cottage for a week.

Upon arrival the house was clean and tidy, but straight away we noticed the washing line was totally filthy , burried under leaves and took my husband 20 mins to clean. The stairs handrail was hanging off the wall & upstairs windows had no way of locking (for safety as they were low and in reach of a toddler) The television downstairs also didn't always work, but we didn't watch it much so it wasn't an issue.

The garden was nice but found the cottage was not refurbished to a standard as advertised. We spoke to Anne Rossiter (owner) and her staff on a few occassions and found them abrupt and just not very welcoming. Upon paying my husband was told to wait 20 mins while Anne Rossiter showed a wedding couple her farm which we thought was rude as they tell you to leave by a certain time, which we did.

Pre children we stayed in the B&B twice in the past and found it ok, clean and tidy, but we won't be returning again. We spent a lot of money and manners cost nothing. The childrens area advertised was surrounded by dog mess from the farms dog, and so we didn't return and use it.

I've booked us into cottage not to far away for next year for an extra £95 for a week (Carswell Farm holiday cottages)

Anne and her team made us so welcome and the wedding weekend ran so smoothly with nothing too much trouble. The venue, the food, accommodation in the house and cottage and service was fabulous. The relaxed homely atmosphere with attention to detail ensured everyone had a wonderful time. The venue contributed hugely to making the wedding a perfect day for all who attended to remember.
