“Lovely location even in the mist”
Reviewed 14 March 2014

This is a small hotel and restaurant overlooking the sea bar in Shaldon. Parking is in a public car park about 50 yards up the hill from The Ness, although there are 3 disabled parking spots near the entrance to the building. We booked a table for 5 in the conservatory over looking the sea, which although it was misty gave a lovely view of the garden and area across the water.
The menu was quite interesting but the Special lunch time menu was not available and some of the starters were very large and expensive. I had fish and chips which was huge and very well presented but was quite expensive. I would return especially on a warm sunny day but I expect then it would be very busy.

Room Tip: Ask for rooms in the main building over looking the sea.

My daughter and grandson asked if my wife and my myself if we would like to go out for Sunday lunch for a change seeing as the weather was so nice. We eventually decided on the Ness the ambience was nice and the food quiet good but boy was it way expensive the drinks especially. Over a hundred pounds for Sunday lunch and drinks and I thought we were supposed to be in a recession and for that reason we shall not return.

2nd visit to see if things had improved - NO. Waited 20 minutes at the bar to be served even though I was the only person at the Bar. The Lager I wanted was not available my wife drinks Bacardi again not available. We were going to eat but decided against it to prevent further disappointment.

Nobody could fault the fabulous location or this lovely building. Having a balcony to soak up the stunning views was wonderful initially.
However, and really disappointingly, outside is the place to be.
The room was incredibly dowdy and basic with dated melamine furniture and an absolutely filthy and very badly stained old carpet.
I tried making tea but there was no teaspoon and then when I tried to add milk from the little pots provided, 2 of them plopped out lumps of rancid sour milk.

Actually, even though out on the balcony was the best place to be because of the stunning view, even there was nasty. There was some sort of mashed insulating tape wrapped around the fencework, all frayed and waving in the wind with huge spiders webs attached. Also on the balcony table there was an ashtray still full of wet and mouldy cigarette butts.

I'm quite shocked and very very disappointed as I love this place.

Plus, I am REALLY angry that I paid £70 for this!!

Wonderful boutique hotel with fabulous views over the teign estuary. Really lovely warm atmosphere. We had two rooms here one for ourselves and one for our daughter. We were fortunate to have a room with the estuary view. The staff here are truly lovely ( especially Ezster), We had an evening meal and also a breakfast in the morning both of which were excellent. A real gem of a place, I plan to return and stay in the honeymoon suite if possible as this has a bath set on a platform with a tv in the wall and again the fabulous views.
If you come to this area you must stay here if you can its amazing, you won't be disappointed!

Room Tip: A room with a room with a view and if you can the honeymoon suite!

lovely location, great food, but the worst mattress i have ever slept on, left with a bad back would not pay the money for this again. Shame as location is lovely and will have to find a new hotel on the same island.

Four of us went here today for lunch (Friday after Christmas). One member of our party has a medical condition that makes swallowing difficult. We asked did they have soup on the menu and were assured that they did. Having been seated we were then told that there was no soup. We spotted cauliflower cheese on the menu and asked could this be pureed so that our party member could eat it. The waitress went to ask the Chef, but came back with the message - No, he says that he is too busy to do this. Has he never heard of a hand blender? Surely there is more than just him in the kitchen? Needless to say we left. They lost 4 covers, future business and are now getting a bad write up in Trip Advisor.

Ironically there is a comment on the menu by the owners saying that they are delighted to serve people and welcome feedback on how they can improve. Here is our advice: Remember that you are in the hospitality industry and that service is paramount - and make sure that your staff understand this and are trained accordingly. The interior of this place is excellent, the hospitality is not.

We later had a superb lunch at the Anchor in Cockwood (see the write up). Definitely will go the Anchor in future.
