“One of the best holidays we have had although we are in our eighties”
Reviewed 16 July 2014

From the moment of arrival we were made to feel at home and nothing was too much trouble for Bev or Neil. The house is just as we had hoped, full of charcter and spotlessly clean. Our bedroom was lovely and was available to us at any time. There was no feeling of having to go out as soon as breaakfast was over so it was very relaxing. All the meals were delicious and beautifullly served. After dinner we enjoyed the company of the other guests while we had our coffee in the charming lounge. We will certainly go again if possible. We arrived as strangers but left as old friends.

Room Tip: We had the Peppermint room which apparently was the largest double but all rooms are en suite

Calm and relaxing, superb welcome and food. There is so much Bev and neil could show most other hotels we have stayed at about looking after guests, which is not the same as "customer care."
Thank you both....looking forward to our next trip

Sampson Barton guest house is a wonderful place to start the new year.My wife and I had a very happy three days with Bev and Neil and other guests and our hosts made us all feel easily at home with a welcoming cream tea in a log fire-lit lounge, comfy spotless en suite room,
and every meal a delight. Bev and Neil are such good hosts that new year midnight came so soon ,we almost missed it. But it came with canapes and champers and a good time was had by all. Highly recommended.

I do travel on business alot. I stayed at Sampson Barton and it was a wonderful experience. It is recognised by the AA, as it clearly shows upon entrance. I was greeted by a wonderful Host Bev. Such a lovely person. The room were perfect. Dinner provided was excellent. I enjoyed meeting other guests staying and had good conversations. I felt at home in this place. Breakfast was good and also speaking to the host Bev got to know the history which i enjoyed.
The whole area was clean and the countryside breathtaking views nearby. Peaceful. Wifi and phone signal was good. Its wonderful when you meet lovely people with smiles. I was really relaxed in this Guest House.Lovely caring Host. Highly recommend it to others. I will definatley visit again.

Approach
After negotiating the winding narrow lanes of Devon via a tempramental Sat Nav, we arrived at Sampson Barton Guest House on the Friday evening of our weekend stay. We were greeted by the proprietor, Bev, and treated to a delicious Devon Cream tea!
The house dates from 1600 so boasts huge fireplaces and lots of history. I should imagine that if you arrived in the winter months the fire would be a great welcome.
Rooms
The rooms we occupied were at the top of the house - a double and a twin room which was adjoining via a Jack and Jill bathroom. Bev kindly also gave us use of the family bathroom as we were a party of 4 and both bathrooms are immaculate and modern. The beds were comfortable too, with a TV in the double room. Tea and Coffee making facilities were in both rooms too.
Breakfast
Breakfast was amazing (Full English every day) but you could ask for any combination, so my husband had a sausage and bacon butty. THe Black Pudding converted me from a "No Way!" to a "Yes please", and although we didn't book an evening meal, we were assured by other guests that were staying that Neil's cooking is fantastic! The restaurant takes bookings from non residents as well.
Gardens
The Gardens are lovely with a view across adjoining farmland, but as the vendors clearly point out small children must not play in them unattended as there are ponds, with lilies, which toddlers could easily just step into! My children are 10 and 11, so played on the tree swing.
Locality
Only a 10 minute drive from the nearest town, South Moulton, and about 15 miles from Barnstaple we were not far from the local attractions and many restaurants and cafes.
We have friends nearby so will definately look at booking again when we visit.

Words can't describe this guest house. Bev & Neil certainly are the perfect hosts. The whole house is spotlessly clean and very comfortable. Although our room was small the facilities were still great and it certainly wouldn't stop me from staying in that room again, and we did book late!
We certainly recommend eating there in the evenings as the three course meal Neil cooked was certainly worthy of 'Master Chef' and we have eaten in some pretty nice places. Bev is a really wonderful host and nothing was to much trouble, tables beautifully laid for dinner and breakfast. Breakfast was also wonderful with a great choice including fresh fruit and home made bread.
Sampson Barton is tucked away in the middle of know where but we didn't have trouble find it and was a joy to be surrounded by rolling hills and complete peace and quiet. Thank you Bev and Neil for a wonderful experience, just sad we couldn't stay longer! Mark & Lol Ennis

Kings Nympton. Sampson Barton Guest House.

Ideally situated for a tour of Exmoor, Somerset Coastal and North Devon, RHS Rosemoor is a short drive and worth a visit.
After an exhausting day touring through the delightful countryside, the best treat is to arrive back at Sampson Barton and indulge the hospitality of Beverly and Neil,
A bit difficult to find if you don’t have a satnav, even then its best to put in the Lat/Long which is provided on their website.
If the word gets out regarding Neil’s culinary skills the chances of getting a room here are going to be slim indeed, entirely self taught, he has a natural gift, which I know would put a lot of classically trained chefs in the shade. One of our aims in venturing forth is to take in recommended food venues, this is one of the best we have encountered but found by accident.. Bev looks after house and does a superb job. Their hospitality is second to none, offered in a very laid back but professional manner, which matches the charm of the house and surrounding countryside.
If the Good Food guide or Michelin gets a view on this place, I think their peace would be shattered, I believe it’s not what they want...So don’t tell anyone.
I am a bit reticent about putting it out on Trip Advisor but I could not let go without paying tribute to Bev and Neil’s excellence…
