Firstly I feel I must say that on this occasion we did not travel on the beautiful Horsedrawn Boat, but instead sampled the hospitality of the 'Brightly Painted' Cafe/Barge situated at the Wharf, and what a wonderful refuge from the deluge of rain it turned out to be! Once inside we were treated to a warm welcome and delicious cups of coffee, or rather 'Latte', irresistible cakes, and comfortable arm chairs to collapse in. We were actually 'refugees' from the ill-fated and hugely waterlogged Canal Festival which sadly 'closed' mid-afternoon due to the horrendous weather conditions. However determined not to be downhearted, or to be 'done out' of our Canal experience we drove from the festival site to the Wharf instead.....how glad we were that we decided to do this. We can definitely recommend the hospitality, the Coffee & Cake and our friends enjoyed the Hot Pasties too. We left there feeling warm, dry, well fed and well looked
after. We did suffer a little pang of guilt however for the Boat Crew and the Horse who had to make it back to the Wharf in the pouring rain! :0(

After a short walk along the old railway line and back along the towpath we made our way to the canal boat. Our barge was to be pulled by " Taffy" the horse and he looked unperturbed at the thought. We were with a group of 26 friends and we pre-booked to make sure there was room for us all, we also pre- booked a cream tea which was served from the bar. The trip was 2.5 hours and was smooth, peaceful and relaxing with a good commentary. Lovely afternoon.

I booked by phone a week before, and the helpful Sam booked us on the morning and afternoon trips as she wasn't sure if there were enough people to make the morning trip viable. As it turned out they cancelled the morning trip, which was a pity as the afternoon trip was crammed full, largely with a coach party of senior citizens. No problem with that except that most of them wanted to chatter, laugh, and get up and down out of their seats as we travelled along the canal. There were two children on the trip who were far better behaved!

Notwithstanding our travelling companions, the trip itself was lovely. The crew were friendly and dressed in traditional costumes to add to the flavour of the occasion. The bar offers real local ales and traditional soft drinks, tea and coffee, snacks and ice creams, as well as souvenirs. There is also a decent toilet on board, important if you take the 2.5 hour afternoon trip!

We enjoyed seeing the gardens of the houses as we left Tiverton, and then spotting the young ducklings and other wildlife further along the canal. Like other reviewers for us the best bit of the trip was the 2 minutes silence on the return trip, a rare opportunity to sit and listen to the sounds of nature. It was interesting to learn about the maths of how one horse can pull over 70 passengers plus crew along the canal. Certainly the horse enjoyed his Polo mints when we stopped for the crew to turn the bait around at the halfway point, which also afforded the opportunity for passengers to walk up to the aqueduct if they wished.

A few days ago we spent a wonderful afternoon aboard this lovely barge. Our horse 'Bailey' was a darling and his rhythmic footstep along with the sound of the canal where magical. Many thanks to Dave Tim and the two Sams. Ordinary people doing a wonderful job. THANKYOU. Recommend this to all..
