“Good food, a friendly welcoming pub”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 6 July 2014

We had an evening meal here, on a Friday. The fitted us in no problem but if we were to go again I would reserve a table. The staff were very welcoming. The inn is steeped in history and I would have liked to have known more about it. It has been opened out in recent years but still retains abundant character. The food was quickly delivered and was just the ticket. Well done!

“An unexpected delight”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 4 July 2014

The Trout Inn, Bickleigh, Devon. Tiny village in the middle of nowhere. Perfect Campari soda: double shot, ice, SLICE OF ORANGE, soda. Scallops roasted in shell with garlic and lemon butter. Plump, sweet, succulent, perfectly cooked. Slow-roasted belly pork, fondant potatoes, red cabbage, apple puree, BLACK PUDDING FRITTER, crackling. Historic. New Zealand Pinot Noir. Plate of four local cheeses, enough to feed a ploughman for a week.Staff welcoming and friendly. So good we went back a second night for crab and crayfish crostini, confit duck leg with fondant potatoes and red cabbage, Fleurie, rhubarb fool.Thoroughly enjoyed our visits. Food and service excellent.

“Another superb trip to the Trout”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 16 June 2014

Having had a great first experience at the trout, it was a no-brainer when asked where to go for lunch when visiting family in the area again. Someone suggested some alternatives, but having also been to them before, the conversation was gently but deliberately steered towards the Trout! We were not disappointed. Ribs, pie of the day, pork chops all devoured, sampled between the group and envied whilst enjoying our own choice. Apple crumbles all round to finish. Will definitely be back.

“Superb”

We recently celebrated my husband's 50th at this Inn, the meal, the service, the atmosphere was excellent, we have over the last year seen the place change for the better, we could not fault anything - a huge thank you to everyone for making his birthday memorable!

“Surprising gem in mid Devon”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 4 June 2014

First, let me start by saying that I never write reviews on tripadvisor, however, having profited over the years from others' dedication and feedback, it seems only fair that I become a contributor. The Trout Inn inspired me to cut my reviewer teeth, based on an excellent welcome, great food, delicious local brews, a nice environment in which to relax, and a super motivated front-of-house team, enthusiastic to share their point of view and gather guest feedback. What made the experience a particular pleasure was that we had set out later than planned from Central London to Cornwall and so we ended up stopping here for lunch, rather than at the pub we had intended to reach.

To provide some color, let me offer up a few example of dishes that are mainstays on the all-day menu: Leg of Devon Lamb, Slow Roast Pork Belly, Wild Mushroom Risotto, Confit of Duck Leg….you get the drift, this is more of a gastro pub, showcasing locally reared cattle and fowl. I opted for the pork belly, which was served just as one would wish, nice and crispy on the outside, with succulent, fork tender meat. It was served with a black pudding fritter and generously-sized potato fondant, accompanied by red cabbage and apple sauce, lending some acidity and crunch. For GBP 11.95, this was a steal!

I would unreservedly recommend The Trout Inn to anyone and look forward to my next visit (maybe not as soon as I would like, given that I have been a US resident since 2001).
