“Good beers, expensive snacks”
Reviewed 6 August 2014

Popped in today with some friends for a beer and a sandwich. I'm sorry but £9 for a sliced bread crab and avocado sandwich with a small side salad is ridiculous. Come on guys, you have a nice place, start pricing your food a little more sensibly please, or I for one won't be back.

Hello RedlynchSunseeker

Thank you for taking the time to leave your feedback. Every comment helps us to see how we need to continue shaping the business to meet our customers requirements. We work hard to prioritise using locally sourced, fresh ingredients which come at a premium (along with the significant overhead costs of running and maintaining such a large business), but we will certainly take your feedback on board. Menus are evolving and rotating regularly whilst the business is in such early stages, so this is something that we will take back to our head chef.

We thank you again and hope to be able to welcome you back again in the future.

Best wishes from the Harrison family

We walked to the Ilchester Arms from Osmington Bay (about 14 miles) and were mighty pleased to this lovely village when we (4 adults and dog) crested the ridge above Abbotsbury. The hotel is in keeping with the village, it's charming and idiosyncratic in a beautiful location and as far away from a corporate experience as you can imagine, given that, I think it's reasonable to fit into the pace of the village and be prepared to wait for quality when things get busy - and that's what we got. On arrival the hotel manager was friendly and flexible, as were his bar and restaurant staff. We were staying in the hotel so had dinner, they were busy and a few things took a little longer towards the very end of the evening than ideal, but the menu and the quality of the cooking and it's presentation were superb, the wine list was reasonably priced. The bar which is used by the village is near to the restaurant and the atmosphere in the restaurant was unstuffy and relaxed. The rooms are spotless although a little dated - they know this and plan to upgrade them - when they get this sorted I would consider adding another star.

There was a great choice at breakfast (we were on a B&B deal) and it was good, the waitress said 'fill your boots' which was very reassuring ! They were happy with us checking out late and at some stage our dog was rewarded with a bag of bonios, so I guess he'd be consistent with my rating.

Hello aguest_10

Thank you so much for taking the time to leave your review. We're glad that you enjoyed your stay, and hopefully once the room renovations have taken place we'll get your final star! Your comments about the food quality and general atmosphere are great to hear, and food timings are something that we're working hard to maintain during busy periods.

We'd love to welcome you back again in the future.

Best wishes from everyone at The Ilchester Arms.

My review is only the experience recently had when we popped into the Ilchester Arms in Abborsbury for somethig light to eat. We each had a starter described as a tomato and cheese tartlet with leaves. We were expecting something on the lines of a small piece of quiche rather than the pastry ring with a few sliced tomatoes and cubes of cheese placed on it. We also had a small glass of wine each, which was very nice, but at £6.00 a glass was pricey.

Hello Grannyomy

Thank you for taking the time to leave a review. We're a new family business and are very much tailoring our menus to the feedback that we receive. We'll relay your comments about the tart to the head chef; certainly our menu descriptions may be something that we could consider detailing further if it helps.

We do also have an extensive wine list, so we'd be very happy to recommend wines that are more cost effective if you'd prefer.

Thank you again, we do hope that we can welcome you back and would love to suggest food (and drink options) to suit.

Best wishes from the Harrison family

Stopped in here for Sunday lunch as is was under new management and looked okay. Went to the bar ordered a drink and asked for menu no problem there. Made my choice and went back to place order, waited 5 mintues and was approached by a member of staff and asked to sit out side and a waitress would take my order. Waited another 10 minutes and the same guy appeared saying that waitress was busy and he would take my order! Went for the beef well done waited another 20 mintues and heard the couple behind me complaining that they were still waiting for their wine. The food arrived with beef rare/ medium at this stage I had lost the will to live so just had my meal and left, The whole experence had lasted about 90 mintues and I even heard the staff telling the customers that they were not busy today how long does a meal take when they are busy?

Hello Colin O

Thank you for your feedback, we appreciate you taking the time to leave these comments. We're really sorry to hear that the service wasn't up to standard, we've recently opened as a new family business so it's early days for us.

We've excluded service charges from all bills as we're aware that the business is finding its feet at times, but we're getting lots of great feedback so it's extremely disappointing for the whole family to read this type of a review.

Your feedback is a great way for us to be able to feed this back to the teams and accelerate the training that's continually taking place. We do hope that you choose to visit us again in the future and we can demonstrate the efficient level of service that we're all working hard to achieve.

Best wishes from the Harrison family

After what felt like forever spent in the car on a hot summer's day we arrived and were greeted by lovely staff who could tell we were in need of refreshments..... The rooms are a little out dated but are most importantly clean and spacious.
The outside patio area is great and the food was to die for, really well thought out menu and very yummy.
The area of Abbotsbury is lovely and great for walking and cycling but be plan your route otherwise you might find yourself spending all day going up hill!!
I would happily go back and would recommend to friends and family.

Hello Ruthee0

Thank you for taking the time to leave a review. We're glad that you had a pleasant stay and enjoyed the abundance of bike rides in the area! The rooms are still pre-renovation, but we've reduced the prices to reflect this, and work hard to ensure that they are comfortable and clean.

We'd love to be able to welcome you back again in the future.

Thanks again and best wishes from everyone at The Ilchester Arms

Absolutely loved this place to drink in but were a little disappointed with food. I didn't like paying for additional items with my steak separately - a side salad was little more than a few leaves. My boyfriend had a few mouthfuls of his meal before it had gone! However I will be returning as I think, from chatting to staff, that this newly taken over pub will take on board the criticisms.

Hello Lillie W

Thank you for taking the time to leave your feedback. We are indeed a new family business, and are very much taking on board all feedback given in such early stages of the business. Its a delicate process to ensure that we meet everybodys requirements, but we're trying in every way we can!

Menus are being worked on and tailored continually to meet customer demand, so we'll certainly continue to look at our food offerings and will let the head chef know your comments about the portion sizes.

Many thanks again, the Harrison family

Would rather not tell everyone about this gem of a place in Abbotsbury so book quickly before everyone gets to know what a great place it is. Stayed here during their recent Cider and Beer Festival great atmosphere and wonderful hosts who made us feel very welcome. Can't wait to come back! The dog loved it too as he was very spoilt with lots of treats.
