Wheelwrights Cottage
Ranked #2 of 6 Abbotsbury B&B and Inns
Reviewed 23 July 2014

We spent a night in this apartment three days ago and it was one of the most positive experiences we've had in our holiday travels throughout the UK.

The room itself is separate from the house, so has its own entrance through the garden, and there is ample parking space ( unusual in Abbotsbury ).

Nigel and Sue Melville, are not merely the proprietors. They are host and hostess. They behave as such - which made us feel not so much travelling lodgers as welcome guests.

On arrival, we were invited into their living room for coffee and scones with cream and jam and very much enjoyed talking with them, both then and after breakfast the next day.Their warmth and friendliness had a lot to do with the quality of our stay. ( It's not often that your host is an author and expert on the history of the town you're staying in! )

The apartment itself is not merely comfortable and attractively furnished; it has a host of small features which have been thoughtfully conceived and well designed, giving it character and ( if one's allowed to use the word ) 'class'. The double bed is large and very comfortable and the shower top quality. Tea and coffee-making facilities offer a wider range of choice than one would normally anticipate ( e.g., Columbian coffee and herbal teas as well as other more obvious options ), and the whole room, although not large somehow felt spacious.

Make no mistake: Wheelwright Cottage provides an unusually high-quality experience

Everything was done to make us both welcome and comfortable.

You're too kind ! We enjoyed welcoming you and chatting with you, and we're delighted that you liked the room and the "little touches". Thank you so much for such a glowing recommendation, and we hope we'll meet up again next time you come back to Abbotsbury.

Booked Wheelwrights for an overnight stay on our return from Jersey. We didn't arrive until early evening as the ferry was delayed and were greeted by Sue and Nigel and invited into their sitting room for coffe and the most delicious scones, jam and cream. Very interesting people to talk to and nothing was too much trouble. The bedroom was nicely furnished and a large bed. The room had it's own entrance at the rear of the property with car parking at the end of the garden. Very quiet. The breakfast was plentiful with cereals, fruit, full english breakfast, toast etc. If you visit this b&b do visit Abbotsbury Sub-Tropical Gardens and Swannery well worth a visit while you are in the area. It was a lovely day and we also went and sat on Chesil Beach for a while.

We stayed here for two nights and loved it. Lovely location, wonderful breakfast. Having your own separate entrance was ideal. Very large and comfortable bed. Sue and Nigel could not have been more helpful. Certainly would stay again.

What a delight this was! To arrive in a beautiful, unspoilt 18th century village and to be greeted so warmly with cream tea was just the start of an extremely pleasurable stay. The accommodation is very comfortable and in a quiet location. We were able to read amongst the flowers in a fine garden. The next morning we were given an excellent breakfast before we went on our way, and wished we had stayed another day.

Many thanks for your generous comments: we're glad you found the garden as good a spot for relaxing as we do.

Hope that your day in Weymouth went well, and that the degree results are everything you'ld like them to be.

Best wishes !

Wonderful B and B with knowledgeable, friendly hosts and your own thatched cottage in their lovely garden. Just as other people have described it. Would definitely stay again in this delightful part of Dorset.

On arrival you are greeted by Sue and Nigel, who are extremely welcoming, not only with a fantastic cream tea but with their friendly conversation. The building is beautifully thatched and the accommodation has its own separate entrance. It is exceptionally comfortable, with little extras that just make you feel cared for: a selection of different hot drinks, extra blankets, various shower gels to choose from in the bathroom. There is even a handy torch for those late night walks back from the local pub when all the lanes are very dark! The breakfast is of a very high standard. It is freshly home cooked with yet more little extras that show how much they care including home made marmalade. They are perfect hosts, offering information about the local area and taking time to listen to anything you want to say. It seems that nothing is too much trouble. If you have a problem just speak with them and they will try to do their very best to help you.

Room Tip: You will be the only guests - there is only one room.

Just chatting to Nigel on the phone when arranging our booking, we suspected that this was going to be a really good place to stay ..... and so it turned out. We were welcomed with a cream tea in the garden and shown to our delightful room in the thatched extension. An excellent nights sleep ahead of a long days walking on the Jurassic Coast. Breakfast was superb and Nigel and Sue were so interesting and informative about the area. A delightful place to return to, both Abbotsbury and Wheelwrights.
