“Afternoon tea”
Reviewed 16 March 2014

My Daughter and I, stopped here for the first time, despite visiting Abbotsbury on many occasions, for an afternoon tea.
As we approached we felt like we were walking into someone's private garden - but found this to be the garden of The Abbey House. Beautifully kept.
We went inside to enquire as to whether they were open for afternoon tea, as we had noticed everywhere else in Abbotsbury, including the Sub-tropical gardens, to be closed, even on this very sunny afternoon.
We were welcomed by a lovely lady - who kindly seated us in at a window table, over looking the gardens. I had a lovely cream tea, with a warm scone, jam & clotted cream and my Daughter ordered the warm chocolate cake served with clotted cream, that made her eyes light up, and a lemonade.
We enjoyed our little treat - just the two of us, and we commented that the room we sat in was very homely, and welcoming, with family photos.
While we ate, a couple arrived, who were obviously staying overnight and they were also very warmly welcomed.
The gentleman, who served our cake was also extremely friendly. It was a pleasure to be welcomed, when so often these days, people don't seem to care if you eat in their establishment or not!

Abbey House scores top marks for everything we look for in a B&B - hospitality, comfort, cleanliness and tranquillity. The fact that it is located on the site of an 11th century abbey gives it added charm and interest. The B&B itself is the old Infirmary, giving great character to the rooms - our son's bathroom used to be a monk's hole! We arrived in the dark but a glance out of the window next morning revealed more mediaeval treasures including the 14th century tithe barn and hilltop chapel.

We stayed in two rooms (St Catherine's and Monks) on the first floor, both nicely decorated and thoughtfully equipped, including efficient wi-fi. St Catherine's is the larger room with a half-tester bed and a nice seating area, but our son was happy in the smaller but comfortable Monks next door. Room prices very reasonable especially out of season.

Host Jonathan is a consummate professional, welcoming and helpful with dining suggestions and advice on the local area. We dined at the KIng's Arms, a very nice pub in the next village with excellent food and service.

Breakfast at Abbey House was as good as expected with ample choice and quality produce. They also have a tea room in season and cater for house parties for special occasions.

Abbey House will be the first place we call when in the Weymouth area - just hope no one else finds out about it;-)

I stayed here several times over the last few years and it is the nicest location and accommodation consistently for me in the UK. I love Dorset, and in particular Abbotsbury, and most of my frequent visits involved a stay at Abbey House and/or dropping in for their fabulous Cream Tea. I had lunch there once too, which was also great. The setting is incredible, with a lovely Garden and Wow factor House. The family are so down to earth and friendly, no wonder they get lots of 'return visits.' Not a single negative, 100% positive over what must be 10 years of visiting! Breakfast deserves an accolade in itself, but the Rooms too as they are all unique and spacious, with lovely views. Peaceful, spotlessly clean and welcoming.

Room Tip: All Rooms are good but only one has no en suite, involving a short walk out of the room. Personally...

From the moment we walked in we felt at home in this cosy, warm and welcoming family run guest house. My husband and I stayed two nights in St Cathrine's room which was comfortable and tastefully decorated. The evening meal was superbly cooked by Jonathan, the owner, and seved by his daughter, Natasha, a lovely girl. We slept very well and so did our Norwegian friends in the Benedictine room. The breakfasts were perfect, the Abbey made museli was the best I have ever tasted and the full breakfasts super. We all said the same as we left, it is the sort of place one wants to return to and stay longer.

Popped in for afternoon tea, weather wasn't great so after walking round gardens sat indoors. Nice old fashioned style dining room nice with character. Had teas and apple cake and muffins. Apple cake lovely and generous pot of tea for two.

Nice friendly service, made to feel welcome. Certainly would like to stay there.

Have a real problem knowing how to do this excellent establishment justice ! From the welcome we were given on arrival until our departure from this family run guest house ,we really enjoyed our stay, albeit short (the next will be longer). We did book ahead tho at short notice, and were very lucky to get a room, The Abbey House is very popular.
The Abbey House is a lovingly presented character property with many of it's original charm remaining. The situation in a secluded lane away from the main delightful Dorset village of Abbotsbury, could well assist in it's attraction, but once you experience the attention of the hosts as well as the comfortable rooms and good food, you are hooked. As my wife has dietary requirements we were delighted to be informed that all her needs could be easily met without special arrangements, this was a bonus indeed. We have no problem in recommending this rural haven to all discerning travellers!

Room Tip: We had the St Nicholas Suite, which enjoyed views over the garden and surrounding countryside. Alth...

If you want rigid floors and straight walls, then book into a Premier Inn. But if you want an atmospheric experience in a centuries old, but spacious, impeccably clean and comfortable accommodation, then try Abbey House, you won’t leave disappointed. Abbey House has an idyllic location, set in a pretty little village, amongst the ruins of an 11th century monastery and overlooking a scenic millpond and England’s largest tithe barn. The world renowned Abbotsbury swannery and award winning sub-tropical gardens are also closeby.
Maureen, our host, was friendly and very helpful, but never intrusive. Our breakfast in the wonderful surroundings of the one-time monastery infirmary, was both delicious and plentiful. Our party of four gave this accommodation a well deserved thumbs up!
