We booked into the Abbey House as a party of 12 for a special birthday. The location and buildings are wonderful - straight from the pages of Thomas Hardy, you are very close to where Tess slaved in the fields - and the atmosphere both within the main house and the beautifully kept outdoor seating area is very evocative of all that is good about our lovely little county.
We were allocated a perfectly sized dining room to ourselves and the food and service were out of this world. I realise now that I have erred in one or two of my previous 5 star reviews, as nothing I have experienced since returning to my native Dorset last July has compared with this. The food was simply scrumptious! A Roast Beef lunch to die for, vegetables that were imaginative, beautifully prepared and piping hot and a waitress service of the very highest order. The desserts were outstanding as well. Truly the icing on the cake!
I have nine relatives who were unable to attend this feast. As humble shepherds and their wives and families of Hardy's era they are buried close by this wonderful Hotel/Restaurant, but how, I am sure, they would have loved to have seen the present day generations laughing, conversing and feasting. An opportunity to do such a thing would have been a rare event for them and I thank my lucky stars that in an age when so many great Dorset restaurants and inns have either closed or fallen into the hands of people who know little of their history and traditions it is still possible to have an experience like this. Wonderful! If I could give this place an extra star I would gladly!
