Don't believe the negative reviews; a lot of effort is being made by Paul and his team to make a stay here truly enjoyable.

The West Bay has recently been taken over by new management - and as such, we wanted to give it a try, as we were former regulars. We popped in at lunch time to have a snack - very good food, good helpings and pleasant staff. If you used to eat/visit the West Bay a few years back, it is back to its old self. Chalk-boards used, rather than stale menu's, so you can see the dishes and menu are regularly changed. It couln't have been more different than the place described on the other reviews, now it is in new hands.

We were at the West Bay with our kids and from the outside and the website it looks nice...cosy and traditional. But what a let down...the food was beyond awful - the kids had battered fish that was over-fried, they served 'french fries' rather than decent chips and the 'veggie' option which was neither advertised or volunteered willingly turned out to be dried pasta, badly cooked, in a watered down tomato puree. For real. The surly man at the bar (the owner, I assume) could not muster a smile for anyone. One couple complained that they had been waiting 45 minutes for their food and were leaving and he just looked up at them over his glasses, shrugged and said nothing. So they left, obviously, and he carried on grumping at his customers. Truly awful. Don't go there...try the other pubs in the village or a tearoom for your grub. Go anywhere else for your accommodation...it'll be a better experience.

OK, so its not perfect but it's NOT terrible. Excellent location, nice big bed with lovely linens. Room basic but clean and comfortable. Decent breakfast. Literal stone throw to the beach and walk to the harbour.

We went twice to the West Bay Hotel restaurant just to re-assure ourselves how bad the food and service is. It truly is. Some of the worse food I've eaten in England, and a staff that didn't give a damn. I had a meat pie, with almost no meat. When I complained to the owner we had actually to count the pieces of meat in it. There were four., the size of sugar cubes. I was told "this is normal".

We arrived early evening no sign to say which door to knock at but eventually find side gate and rang bell took a while to answer.

We found the room very clean but there was no telephone and the television did not give a very good picture.

Our meal the first night was okay but my husband was disappointed not the fish that was put on website menu was omitted on the menu used in restaurant. The following morning breakfast was served prompt between 0815 abd 0900hrs not a lot of leeway. The poached eggs were hard but the cook confirmed she was not too good with poached eggs.

The following evening Rib Eye steaks were ordered and were tough and dry and were not very tasty this we relayed to the waiting staff but no one came to the table to apologise nothing was said.

We felt not a very welcoming place which was very disappointing and spoilt the weekend away. A great shame as it was something we were looking forward to with our friends.

The West Bay Hotel, West Bay, Bridport, DT6 4EW
Dates 28/03/2008 - 29/03/2008

We arrived at 5pm. The place was deserted with doors locked and lights out. Struggled back to car with suitcases and telephoned Hotel. They said to use the side entrance and ring the bell. Eventually door is opened. Why are they unable to put a notice or a bell at the main entrance!!!

Room adequate.

We used the restaurant on our first night. Food below average. Whilst we were dining a group of three people arrived 20 minutes late (8.50pm). They were told that they were too late and would not be served. They will not be back and neither will we. After the meal we enquired what time breakfast would be. Imagine our surprise when told if would be between 0815 - 0900 and this on a Saturday and Sunday due to the chefs needing the time to prepare the lunch menu. This was a very simple menu and in my opinion would take very little time to prepare. I said to mine host "never mind the customer then" he was either deaf or chose to ignore my remark.

Breakfast was average although this "famous" chef was unable to produce poached eggs. They were served hard.

We again used the restaurant the next evening. Again disaster. We all ordered Rib Eye steaks which were tough and dry served with Macdonald style chips (must have been frozen). The waitress said she would inform Chef. Needless to say Chef never spoke to us.

Another odd thing there was no pasta on the menu and this in 2008?

That night the clocks went forward. We made special note of this otherwise we surely would have missed breakfast. Unfortunately the Hotel did not remember to adjust their heating. We therefore woke up to a freezing room.

At breakast we were asked if we remembered to put our watches forward. I replied we had but they had forgotten the heating. The lady thought this was rather amusing. Poached eggs were better today. Maybe this was because we had told them about the previous days. Whilst we were eating breakfast mine hosts were cleaning and vacuming the breakfast area. Never seen this before in a hotel.

Finally, you have to be out of your room by 10am so look sharp.

Hotel seems to be run for the convenience of owners rather than guests.
