Hidden in the stunning countryside, just outside Bridport is The Marquis of Lorne... The first view of the property took our breath away, it is stunning. Plenty of outside space, there are two gardens, one with a fabulous children's activity area) which are separated by a large hedge, which is gives you the choice of a quite space away from the kiddies. Also a lovely patio space outside the front of the hotel.
The inside does not disappoint either, lots of lovely nooks, crannies & beams. We stayed in room 1, which was lovely & roomy, we also had a short visit to room 4, which was equally well furnished to a high standard. Ensuite was modern, spotless & lots of shelving & the bed made for sweet dreams.
We had planned to eat just the one night in the restaurant, then sample others, but were so blown away by the food, that we ate there our second night as well. I could have stayed for a week & sampled all dishes on the lush menu, but then again it would be so difficult not return to previous dishes. In fact himself changed his mind about four times on the second night & then had the dressed crab for a second night running.
I could wax lyrical about this wonderful hostelry for ages, the wonderful hosts & their staff, they made us feel more like extended family, then paying guests.
I cannot recommend the Marquis of Lorne highly enough & we will definitely be returning.

Room Tip: Having seem two rooms, I would suggest that all are of a very high standard.

A few miles from Bridport, in the hamlet of Nettlecombe. Nestled within the beautiful countryside of West Dorset, it epitomises peace itself. You would need a car to get to the sea, or anywhere really. However, that makes this part of the charm of The Marquis. Our room was clean and comfy, not huge, but totally adequate, and the view from our window was just lovely, fields and fields. It is not a super modern hotel, and does not pretend to be so. It is a pub with rooms, and a wonderful place to be. We booked for 2 nights, and stayed 5 instead, as we just felt so relaxed and comfortable.
Breakfast was wonderful. Homegrown fruit every morning, scrummy scrambled eggs for me, and full English for Himself. The Marquis serves lunches, very yummy, and evening meals, again very high standard. I cannot find any real negative points, it was a perfect place to stay where you can just relax and unwind.

Very comfortable well appointed accommodation, good range of well maintained real ales, a great food menu with many locally sourced ingredients, best meal I've had this year, good sized car park, WiFi speed in pub good, staff friendly upbeat and professional (even at breakfast), the lawn of the beer garden/kids play area would put many a bowling green to shame. Sitting at the front of the pub there seems to be roads going in every direction yet there's very little traffic, quite magical . You're probably not going to get a mobile phone signal without a walk uphill but given the setting this is a positive, A gem.

Our third trip here was every bit as good as the other two. it is hard to praise this place too highly - the location is stunning, the rooms clean, tidy and well maintained, the food and drink excellent and the staff could not be more pleasant and accommodating. Try the short round trip walk from the pub, through Nettlecombe hamlet, up to Powerstock village (where, incidentally, there is another nice pub, the Three Horseshoes) and back to the Marquis. It shows off this beautiful, hidden little valley as its best.

A group of us stayed here while on a touring holiday of the south coast, what a great place! The staff were all very friendly. The rooms were well presented and extremely clean. The food was excellent and the beer was great.

Couldn't recommend more highly.

Our fourth visit to this fabulous traditional country pub hidden away on a quiet country lane. Friendly staff and atmosphere with superb food and beer. Rooms are very clean, comfortable with super beds and home made chocolates and cookies. The mini fridge for the milk at the top of the stairs such a good idea. The ideal getaway to unwind and recharge but it does become addictive as we have booked our fifth visit in January!

On the off chance on bank Holiday weekend we called in to see if there was any room at the inn and lucky for us there was. We stayed in room number 2 which was nice and clean, lovely decorated and had everything needed for a pleasant stay.we stayed 2 nights and had dinner both nights food was superb of a very high standard all served by a friendly waitress or the landlady who was lovely.

Breakfast was also good with a choice of cereal, fruit and a full English to follow.

Fantastic stay and would definitely recommend
