Lovely hotel and setting with wonderful touches. Owners appear to take a lot of pride in the service they supply. Food excellent. Shame we only stayed one night but will be looking at making a return visit.

We spent two nights here and enjoyed the peace, the welcoming atmosphere and the delicious food. Highly recommended for a long weekend break, and the Scrambled egg with smoked salmon for breakfast is a delight.

Great reviews on trip advisor
So we booked
It was clean friendly and good value
Definitely not boutique shabby chic that we usually go for
The food was ok bit the lobster was a little bland and small
Wish I had had it at the hive beach cafe instead
Sun was shining and staff were friendly

So good value overall

The other reviews are right. This really is a gem. The menu is varied and frequently original. The quality of the cooking is absolutely spot on. It's not fiddly-fiddly food, but it is beautifully presented and perfectly cooked. The bedroom was comfortable, and breakfast was great - with beautiful fruit especially. I really can't recommend this pub enough. We will be back

We have stayed here many times because it is so suited to our needs. Peace and tranquility amidst the stunning Dorset countryside and coast. The staff are so welcoming, friendly and nothing is too much trouble. We are made to feel special. The rooms are comfortable and the food is outstanding, whether eating in the restaurant , the bar or outside in the lovely garden.. Age now prevents us taking the many spectacular walks around the area as we did in the past,
but none the less we thoroughly enjoy the beauty of England at its best. On this occasion, we were accompanied by my sister, who realises why we return again and again. She was equally charmed by this first rate destination.

Hidden in the stunning countryside, just outside Bridport is The Marquis of Lorne... The first view of the property took our breath away, it is stunning. Plenty of outside space, there are two gardens, one with a fabulous children's activity area) which are separated by a large hedge, which is gives you the choice of a quite space away from the kiddies. Also a lovely patio space outside the front of the hotel.
The inside does not disappoint either, lots of lovely nooks, crannies & beams. We stayed in room 1, which was lovely & roomy, we also had a short visit to room 4, which was equally well furnished to a high standard. Ensuite was modern, spotless & lots of shelving & the bed made for sweet dreams.
We had planned to eat just the one night in the restaurant, then sample others, but were so blown away by the food, that we ate there our second night as well. I could have stayed for a week & sampled all dishes on the lush menu, but then again it would be so difficult not return to previous dishes. In fact himself changed his mind about four times on the second night & then had the dressed crab for a second night running.
I could wax lyrical about this wonderful hostelry for ages, the wonderful hosts & their staff, they made us feel more like extended family, then paying guests.
I cannot recommend the Marquis of Lorne highly enough & we will definitely be returning.

Room Tip: Having seem two rooms, I would suggest that all are of a very high standard.

A few miles from Bridport, in the hamlet of Nettlecombe. Nestled within the beautiful countryside of West Dorset, it epitomises peace itself. You would need a car to get to the sea, or anywhere really. However, that makes this part of the charm of The Marquis. Our room was clean and comfy, not huge, but totally adequate, and the view from our window was just lovely, fields and fields. It is not a super modern hotel, and does not pretend to be so. It is a pub with rooms, and a wonderful place to be. We booked for 2 nights, and stayed 5 instead, as we just felt so relaxed and comfortable.
Breakfast was wonderful. Homegrown fruit every morning, scrummy scrambled eggs for me, and full English for Himself. The Marquis serves lunches, very yummy, and evening meals, again very high standard. I cannot find any real negative points, it was a perfect place to stay where you can just relax and unwind.
