“We'll definitely be coming back again!”
Reviewed 29 June 2011

After hearing (and reading) a lot about this area of West Dorset we decided to come to Bridport to see for ourselves! The Bull was recommended on various websites and we were interested to see if the hype lived up to reality - we were most certainly not disappointed.
We chose to stay in the cozy 'Chinese Petite' room. This is a beautifully decorated intelligent use of a small room. The bed was very comfortable with clean soft linens that won't fail to disappoint! There was also a small white desk in the corner with a flat screen TV and DVD player. The bathroom was just the right size and the soaps that were provided lovely.
The room's window looked out onto the courtyard at the back of the hotel which was especially nice a night when it was all lit up.
We stayed for two nights and ate in the restaurant one night and The Stable (owned by the hotel and situated at the back selling homemade pizza and a large range of cider) the other night. The restaurent had very friendly and helpful staff who were especially good in helping us to make our minds up from the menu (so much to choose from - the fish pie is recommended!). There were no problems with waiting times or any thing else.
The Stable's relaxed atmosphere was really lovely too! The staff were happy and seemed to be enjoying what they were doing. We're not normally cider drinkers but because of the huge range (almost 60) we were able to fine some that suited us perfectly with the help of the staff who were more than happy to give us samples! The pizza was outstanding, nothing like anything that we had had before and it comes highly recommended too! My husband also has a gluten intolerance and they were able to provide a gluten free alternative.

We have both been raving about the hotel (and the restaurants) to everyone we know and would highly recommend it to you.

We stayed 4 nights at The Bull in early June. Early impressions were favourable - a warm welcome from Rebecca and an introduction to the hotel and its amenities. We were then shown to our ( front ) room, which despite overlooking the main street was quiet, thanks to efficient double-glazing.

The linen was first-class, but the fixtures and fittings less so. The shower-head was clogged with scale, which had to be removed with a pin and there was no mirror or dressing table within a hairdryer's length. Privacy was compromised with each passing double-decker bus !

The insomniacs above us one night crashed around a lot and the antiquity of the building exacerbated this.

The food was almost faultless, at breakfast, lunch or dinner and the wine list reasonable and fairly-priced. A top effort from the kitchen.

The big, big let-down was the service : this was unbelievably amateurish and cack-handed. Some very amiable young staff, but badly managed - if at all - with tables waiting to be cleared at all meals and far too much talking going on instead of working.

There was a heated exchange of words with the restaurant manageress one evening, when the four of us appeared to be interrupting her running of the place. Not a happy incident, but well contained by the French member of staff, who was head and shoulders better than any other.

The whole impression was that no one was running the place and the owners were nowhere to be seen, though they may of course have been on holiday.

Overall, The Bull missed the mark. It is an expensive place to stay and our lasting impression is that the owners set up a great place, then forgot how to run it. Most of the staff seem to like to hang out at in a cool place, rather than work, though they were all perfectly pleasant.

We moved on to The Master Builder in Beaulieu : the staff at The Bull should pop down there and see how it's done !

2 nights at the Bull cost us £470. We stayed in The Mews Room which has apparently just been all done up. It was a really nice room but things like the bulb on the Philippe Starck lamp they boasted was a feature being out, and the bathroom being internal with no ( visible) way of switching on a fan was a bit disappointing. The bed was comfortable and the linen lovely but when the curtains are open anyone can see right into your room. They should mabe put shutters up on bottom half of the large bay window to improve privacy as it is on the ground floor. Breakfast was okay but they did get our order wrong and it was served on a cold plate. The waitress was also not remotely interested in fixing it for us, again a little disappointing as the bar staff we dealt with the rest of the time were all extremely friendly and helpful.

My major gripe though is the fact we came back from a wedding on the Saturday night at 2 am and could not get in to the hotel. The front door key we were given attached to our room key did not fit. We were on the doorstep outside in the rain for 20 minutes ringing the doorbell and calling the number on the plate outside. We only eventually got in when some other guests returned and their key worked. For the price we paid, I would at least have expected a porter type person or someone to be contactable for any issues, not good enough.

Hotel overall was nice, staff nice (some of them) but would not rush back. Very overpriced for what is a nice boutique B and B.

There was also no WiFi in our room

Nice room but overpriced. Staff friendly & helpful and room clean and big enough although quite stuffy and only able to open the sash window about 4 inches.

Food okay but not value for money. People rave about this hotel and while it is nice, it's not amazing and definitely not value for money. We paid £175 per night and I think that it is probably worth nearer £120. If I had to go to Bridport again, I would stay here but I won't be rushing back!

The Bull is a great B&B. It is unpretentious, with excellent (helpful) staff who know the area and make good recommendations. The bar is small, but relaxing and the restaurant serves good food (and has dropped its prices since we last went in 2008).

We really like this place and it's a great base for the lovely Jurassic coast (plus Bridport is a nice little town) but the only negative (per the title) is that it can be noisy at night/morning. The Bull is situated on the high street and if it is not the roadsweepers or the market setting up (on a Wednesday) or someone impersonating Tom Jones at 2am, then the seagulls might keep you awake. I am a light sleeper, so notice these things (despite the secondary glazing), plus we had a front room - so possibly the solution is to ensure you get a back room: ask - I am sure reception will be delighted to help.

Room Tip: Back room to minimise noise

Great dinner and breakfast, and loved the style of decor and furnishing. Rooms nicely done, but really tiny (room 107). Made up as double, but really only a single. If I'd been staying with my wife I'd have asked to be moved. Nowhere to put anything down, and had to put hotel blurb under the bed. Wardrobe door kept falling closed as floor was not level, so put clothes hanger under one side. No drawers though, and no table or chair, just a double bed. Would make a lovely single room, so why try and make it a double. Also, no shaver socket in the bathroom and had to ask for adaptor, but quickly produced. However, it is a lovely hotel for all that, and would stay there again.

Room Tip: Look at room first and make sure its big enough.

My husband and I stayed here for 2 nights in room 202 finding the hotel through the Mr,Mrs Smith guide. First impressions did not blow us away but also did not disappoint. Perhaps best described as shabby chic. The decor is well considered and works to create a nice atmosphere. The staff were fantastic and so was the food. The bed was very comfortable with quality sheets etc and everything was very clean. We had breakfast and dinner in the main restaurant as well as drinks in the Stables which had a great array of cider and tasty pizza's and excellent cocktails in the Venner bar. We had a great time staying at this hotel and felt very at home and when it was time to pay the bill we didn't feel cheated. Other small hotels across the country should follow suit. Great food, staff and comfortable rooms..simple
