We had a delightful stay at The White House. It's a beautiful old building, set back from Charmouth's quiet main street (how a previous reviewer managed to complain about traffic noise is beyond me - must be a very light sleeper with the hearing of a bat!) and ideally located for exploring this part of Dorset. Ian and Liz, and their team, are the most affable and welcoming of hosts. And the breakfast, mostly locally produced or home-made, was a daily treat. The only thing stopping a full five star rating is that, at the price, our bedroom (#1) - while comfortable and immaculately kept - was small, bordering on cramped.

Room Tip: It's probably worth paying a bit extra and getting the much larger Superior Room, if it's av...

Thank you for your very nice comments and for your honest feedback. We are of course delighted that you enjoyed the White House and our little corner of Dorset.

As for the size of some of our rooms, we are increasingly aware that many people do tend to want larger rooms these days when going away.

In an old regency building such as ours we are very limited as to what we can do, especially as bathrooms have been added within the original room itself to provide en suite facilities which are of course 'de rigueur' these days.

You may be interested to know that in January we are embarking on a major refurbishment of the bedrooms. At the end of that month , all being well we will have in effect four rooms up to and we think exceeding the standard of our current Premier Room. We will also retain one smaller ground floor room for single or double occupancy.

Liz and I have been here at the White House for twelve years now and in this time we have always tried to keep abreast of the changing and evolving requirements of our customers and in this time they have changed considerably. We do listen to feedback , we are grateful for it and we always act on it where we can.

We are confident that the improvements we are currently planning will not only reflect the valuable feedback we get from our guests but will also allow us to continue to meet and hopefully exceed your expectations for many years to come. The work commences on January 3rd 2013 and we should be back open all being well by the first week of February. Have a look at our website in January/February when we should have everything up online and we hope to be able to welcome you backto the NEW IMPROVED WHITE HOUSE sometime next year.

Travelling through Dorset we came upon this wonderful little hotel in Charmouth. Owners Ian and Liz made us very welcome, served us tea and biscuits on arrival on the terrace at the front of the hotel and were more than helpful with tips of where to go and what to do in the area. We had the premier room to the rear for one night only as that was all that was available but we would have stayed longer if we could have. The room was very comfortable and beautifully decorated.
The food was superb both breakfast and dinner ,several gold Taste of the West awards have been won over the last few years and are well deserved, we could not find fault at all.
Very much recommended.

Room Tip: Choose the premier room, lovely big super king bed and a double bath!

Thank you and we are pleased we helped make your visit to West Dorset a memorable one.You do need more than a couple of days to really get the best out of the area but I am sure a couple of days will just whet the appetite for a longer stay. We look forward to welcoming you back soon.

Having just bought a holiday property in Charmouth this hotel was recommended to us by local people as the best place for dinner. We were not disappointed. We had drinks with home made nibbles in the cosy sitting room followed by a delicious and beautifully presented meal .Coffe and tea afterwards in the sitting room chatting to Ian the chef/owner and other guests completed the evening. I would highly recommend this hotel for a meal and we will certainly recommend it to those who stay in our cottage.

Why isn't it on the Trip Advisor restaurant listings?

My wife and I have just returned from another memorable few days break at this hotel. Yet again we have been very impressed with everthing Ian and Liz and the "team" have to offer. The food was glorious, the "welcome" very warm (even warmer on the main night of the flooding when Ian lit the log fire in the lounge) and the standard of both bedrooms we stayed in and the fitttings etc: were very high. Given the freak weather conditions and little chance of safely going out for 24 hours at one point we were just very glad we were staying in such comfortable surroundings.
Having stayed in many different types of hotels here and abroad, I can honestly say this is one of the very few (at any price) that encapsulates the word "service" so well on so many different fronts. The only downside for my wife was she maintained Ian's "Gooseberry fool" wasn't quite as good as hers but I think she is a little partisan on this matter. Can't wait to return but hopefully accompanied by somewhat better weather conditions!!

Thanks for your kind words, it was lovely to see you again ( in spite of the hard time I got over the gooseberry fool! You will have to bring me one of your own next time you come, so a fair comparison can be made at a blind tasting in front of a panel of experts.)
It was an interesting weekend weather-wise. Fortunately Charmouth escaped most of the worst of the weather though there will be plenty more fossils on the beach after all that rain.
It is rather odd having to light a fire in the lounge in the middle of July, but with everyone coming back cold and wet from a stoic afternoon walk in the rain, it was the best way of drying people out.
Sunday was a completely different day and we had a glimpse of the summer.Quite a contrast.

After tiring journey from London we received a warm welcome from Ian and Sue. Dinner was preceded by drinks in the lounge with an opportunity to meet the other guests.
The food was all fresh and very well prepared by Ian. Plentiful portions with a good choice from the menu. All food sourced from local suppliers.
Bedrooms well appointed And very comfortable.
Shame it as only a weekend stay. Far more time is needed to explore this part of the Dorset coast and we will try and return.

I took my partner here as a birthday treat and stayed one night in May.

This is a lovely accommodation - perfectly located for the coast and River Cottage. The rooms are basic but nicely decorated and comfortable.
I definitely recommend the full English breakfast - one of the best I ever had!

Room Tip: Note that in the summer months and Bank Holidays, the minimum stay is 2 nights.

Thank you for your review and for choosing The White House for your River Cottage trip. We do pride ourselves on the ingredients we use for breakfasts, dry cured bacon and proper meaty sausages made on a local farm, excellent bread (hand cut not pre sliced supermarket rubbish) from Leakers Bakery in Bridport. Often the eggs are from our own chickens. We are delighted that you enjoyed it so much.

Like many small hotels we do ask for a minimum two night stay at weekends but occasionally have the odd room available for one night if bookings fall that way.do call us or check availability on our website.
