“A wonderful relaxing break.”
Reviewed 7 April 2014

We have just returned from a relaxing five-night break a The White House and are delighted to recommend it to anyone seeking top quality hotel accommodation with the most genial and generous hosts, Ian and Liz.
We were greeted in the private car park by Ian who insisted on taking care of the luggage.
The historic house has been lovingly restored with internal curved walls and great curved doors to match all lit by chandeliers from the lofty ceilings.
We saw all four of the bedrooms each very spacious, individually furnished and decorated in keeping with this grand old house. Our room was No 3 at the back upstairs. It is full of character, large, bright, airy, spotlessly clean, very warm and comfortable with a super-king size bed and a mountain of crisp white pillows - guaranteeing a very good night's sleep. The bathroom is also large with a huge bath, bath essence in which to luxuriate and fluffy white bathrobes.

Ian is a superb chef from the scrumptious local bacon and sausages at breakfast, not forgetting the best muesli (plus fruit and yoghurt) that we have ever eaten to creative and beautifully cooked scallops, duck breasts and home-baked, light as can be, Dorset apple cake - simply mouth-watering. One of their secrets is that most of the food is sourced from the local farmers' market.
Nothing is too much trouble for Liz and Ian whether it is a dietary requirement or advice on where to find fossils - they even loaned us a fossil hammer.
The break was to celebrate a special wedding anniversary and they really made it very special for us.
Thank you both - we will be back.

Room Tip: All the rooms are spacious and individually furnished and decorated in keeping with the grand house...

Thank you for your wonderful review .

We were very happy that you chose to stay with us for your Golden Wedding celebrations and that we lived up to your expectations.

Thank you also or your kind comments about the food. We try very hard to keep what we offer both local and seasonal and prepare almost all of it daily on the premises. It is always gratifying when this is recognised as we firmly believe it is the best way.

Thank you once again and we would be delighted to welcome you back to the White House

After a recent stay at the White House Hotel we were discussing its merits and Sue and I decided to individually list them and we came up with a hundred: I have to confess that there was a difference of opinion over the final one. I said that “I was impressed that the female members of the establishment who were very attractive and always, just always, had a genuine smile on their faces” – she agreed but said it was a ‘sexist’ remark whilst I said it was factual [and that is true!!]
On a more serious note; it really is a splendid hotel and quite impossible to fault. Everything from the size of the rooms (in reality they could be classed as ‘suites’) to the attention that is given to the minute details which make this an outstanding place to stay. There is always a danger that such attention to detail can result in an impression of ‘twee’ but the proprietors paint on a large canvas with broad strokes and easily avoid this criticism and in so doing produce an hostelry which I believe to be virtually unequalled in its comfort, standard of service, excellence of food and indeed ‘value for money’

We recently spent the valentine weekend at the White House Hotel, Charmouth. The property is a beautiful Georgian House with many original features such as internal wooden shutters and curved doors. We received a very warm welcome on arrival. It was great to have on site parking to the rear of the property and our room was beautiful with a huge ensuite bathroom. There were fresh roses in the room and dressing gowns for our use. We opted to have dinner in the hotel and received a superb meal and a great breakfast the following morning. The staff and owners were very friendly and attentive and couldn't have been more helpful. There are many places of interest to visit locally. Thank you for a wonderful weekend stay. We would love to come again.

Just got back from a really nice last minute night away. The White House is a lovely property full of charm and chartacter. We stayed in room 3 which was at the back upstairs, really large, spotlessly clean and with the best bath I've ever soaked in! If you want to do some fossil hunting just be aware - after driving to Lyme Regis and asking in the fossil shop where the best place to look was, I was directed back to Charmouth, literally to the road opposite the hotel! Oh well it was nice to visit Lyme which was only about 10 mins drive away. Ian the owner kindly lent me a hammer too, so don't be afraid to ask for that.
We had dinner at the hotel which was very nice. Top notch sticky toffee pudding - my favourite pudding and one of the best I've had! The member of staff serving was really attentive but because It's a small hotel all I would say is it lacks atmosphere compared to going out for a meal, but that's just one of those things and you can make your choice accordingly. Breakfast VERY good quality too.

As this is a review site the only (constructive) critisism I have is that I thought the food a little pricey (about £19 a main), the bed in room 3 was incredibly soft especially on the side nearest the door - my wife took great pleasure in telling me the next day that her side was fine - which it was!) and the alarm clock/docking station decided to blast out a noise periodically throughout the night, similar to when a text comes through whilst listening to the radio. I tried to ignore it but eventually scrambled around in the dark and unplugged the blighter! Lastly I thought one egg for breakfast a bit mean, especially for a growing (31 yr old) lad!

The most important thing to us was that this was a fantastic property, in a great location, run by freindly and obviously hard working people who aim to please and do a bloody good job. I was particularly impressed by the size of the salt grains ;-)

Thanks for a lovely stay,

The Mabey's

Thanks for your review and we are glad you enjoyed your stay with us.

Charmouth beach is a great place for fossiling especially after the recent storms and although Lyme is a great place to visit, there is no need to go to the 'big city' to bag a few ammonites and belemnites.

In our restaurant we do endeavour to use the best quality, local sourced and freshest ingredients all prepared and cooked to order which is reflected in the Gold Taste of the West and AA Dining awards we received last year. This is of course further reflected in the prices we charge and is commensurate with the quality we are aiming for. We are also competitive with many of the restaurants and pubs nearby with a similar ethos. We are however glad you enjoyed your meal, especially the sticky toffee pudding.

By and large the vast majority of people just ask for one egg with the full breakfast. We would have been happy to serve two eggs for you had you asked, (the scrambled eggs with the full breakfast is always two eggs) We don't like to send people away hungry!

Sorry to hear that you were woken in the night by the radio. I have checked it and it is working fine. I am almost certain that it was due to a mobile phone being left too close to the unit with both switched on which will causes this noise to happen each time the phone searches for messages.

Thanks for your honest feedback though it is always appreciated and I hope we have encouraged you to make a return visit.

Run by a warm and friendly couple, the food is excellent and the rooms are luxurious. Our room was spacious with beautiful views and an enormous bed which was blissfully comfortable.

There were lots of thoughtful touches like dressing gowns, fresh milk in the fridge and ground coffee for the cafetiere in our room. All the food was locally sourced, including the biscuits with the tea and coffee-making facilities.

The only flaw in our stay was the very narrow entrance to the car park. Best to park on the road unless you have a smaller car. Oddly we got in alright but scuffed the paintwork on our Mondeo on the way out (probably doubled the cost of the stay :-( ).

Once you are in they treat you like a guest in their own home and can't do enough for you. We were only there one night but we'll be back

Room Tip: Room 3 is at the back, away from the road and with nice views over the hills. Can't comment on...
