We walked Charmouth beach with our guide Chris Pamplin [ www.fossilwalks.com ] and what a fantastic guide he was. Our party comprised of myself and my teenage son - I have no knowledge of fossils and my son has loads but Chris made it all so easy and catered for both our levels.Chris was approachable - knowledgeable but not patronising. Before the start of our walk Chris talked us through the do's and donts and showed us what we might find, what we could hope to find and wast if we were very very lucky we might just find. Off we went hammers in hand ready to find our first fossils.
The time just flew by , Chris talked us through the rock formations, how to split rocks , clues to look out for, and above all helped us to find lots and ,lots of ammonites. By the time we were leaving the beach we felt we had learned a lot and would be able to return armed with a lot of skills to carry on the hunting . Chris made the whole experience fun and left us wanting more. Great , a must for anyone with and skill level and interest in fossils.

There are lots of guided fossil walks in this area but by chance and the timing of the tides at Lyme Regis, we selected one starting on Charmouth Beach led by Nigel Clarke. An excellent decision, nigel@ncjpublications.co.uk.
We were a party of three adults, a toddler and an enthusiastic seven year old, well below the limit of ten people for a private walk.
There are three car parks on this beach, two charge £2.50 a day the other by the hour. We met Nigel by the bridge and after an informative talk about the different types of fossils and how they are formed,we walked along the beach. Nigel had the ability to engage my seven year old grandson as well as inform at an adult level.
We all had a productive afternoon as Nigel was able to show us good places to search and more importantly, what to search for!

We visited at the end of May and joined an afternoon trip. Very well informed tutor, who made finding fossils so much easier.....everybody found one and some very fine examples were found. Suitable for all ages and super for kids......

We are two families with two girls (6 and 8) and we asked Nigel to show us the fossils at Charmouth. The day was a chilly Sunday in April, but after an initial and very engaging tutorial, we were off across the rocks and mud armed with spoons to dig out fossils. The advice and help were really invaluable and we all spent a very fun afternoon digging around and finding lots of great treasure for show and tell at school. We would thoroughly recommended this: the help Nigel provided turned a good idea for an afternoon activity that would have petered out through lack of local knowledge and expertise into a really engaging and memorable afternoon.
